When applying too oxford are you guranteed a place at your preffered college

No, you aren't guaranteed - students are normally interviewed by two colleges at Oxford to my knowledge. Somewhere between 1/4 to 1/3 of students get offers from other colleges, between Oxford and Cambridge, fluctuating year to year, as I understand. I think Oxford tends to slightly more often make offers for the first indicated college than Cambridge (this is probably because of the lack of Girton/Homerton where people avoid applying to those directly and they need to pool more over - not that there's anything wrong with either of those colleges ).

But applying to a college is the best way to ensure you are taken by that college

Would there still be interviewing by 2 different colleges if i was going for a masters at oxford or would the process be different.
Ohhh i see as i am durham at the moment so i wasnt sure what the chances were if i was to apply to oxford that i would get my first choice college as i did at durham

I can see why people may avoid those 2 colleges as am i right in thinking they arent as well known as others

Oh, my comment was regarding UG admissions (completely missed the "graduate" part of your post!). I'm not too sure for PG at Oxford. At Cambridge PG admissions are arranged centrally, and you're "assigned" a college after the university accepts you - although you can indicate I think three preferred colleges. If PG admissions are handled by individual colleges (as with UG admissions) at Oxford, then the same advice probably applies. But it may not - you're probably best checking their website admission pages.

Cambridge certainly handles PG admissions centrally - i.e. the university admits you, then a college accepts you by default. UG admissions are handled by the colleges - a college accepts you, then the university accepts their judgment and admits you by default.

Hopefully oxford would accept as i expect law masters are fairly competitive espically at oxford but i do have a first

Ah - if it's the BCL, then it's very competitive to my knowledge. A first would be the minimum prerequisite! Good luck in any case, you're on track to meet the requirements so you just need to impress them with the rest of it

I did the Law BA followed by the BCL.

For PG applicants, you are not guaranteed a place at your preferred college. I know of people who got re-allocated.

Admission to the BCL is based solely on a paper application; the law faculty does not conduct interviews. If I remember correctly, you'll need to submit a personal statement, three references and a piece of written work.

Postgraduates tend to have less to do with their colleges than undergrads anyway. It doesn't really matter.

All your teaching is in the department and not in the college so for PG the college is more just a place to live/socialise.

I guess maturity mainly - graduates tend to arrive with more complete lives and goals and are less interested in slumming it up in student halls sharing everything (everything) with everyone else. Though there are practical differences too - teaching tends to be held in central departments rather than in the colleges, for instance.
