Petition for more NHS Pay

I’ve made a petition would other TSR members help to sign it to get it live and then see if we can get 10,000 signatures to at least get a discussion in the commons.

My petition:
We demand a meaningful pay Increase for all NHS staff earning £25,000 or less pa

Front end nursing staff are at breaking point. It's no wonder many are walking away from nursing. Time to provide a meaningful pay rise for lower pay scales. I propose all NHS staff on pay grade 5 or under are given an increase of at least 10%. Time to show the front line that we value them.

I have just watched at first hand an Assistant nurse on grade 4 earning £19,600 p.a finish a 12.5hr shift, during that time he did not stop, not even for the required tea break, it was constant. He did this out of love and compassion for others. It is no wonder we are losing these front line workers. Ask yourself: would you do that job for that pay rate? It really is Time to reward these people.

The thing is HMG previously either froze Pay all together or slapped a flat rate increase accross all bands. This resulted in managers and consultants, many already earning well over £100k a year getting more money whilst those at the bottom earning 15-25k getting next to nothing.

Maybe it's just me and others don't feel the same but I really feel a certain injustice for junior staff coming in or lower grades. These staff really do an incredible amount of work for relatively low money not to mention a high level of training and hands on experience in the job that's required to get to grade 4.

Doing the job in the NHS for love and compassion for people is a wonderful thing but they still have bills to pay, really would like to see this taken seriously. Any here that agree that can offer a vote would be appreciated

Thanks
When I click on the link i can't see the actual petition...

Agree with the sentiment, but to note: most band 5 nurses do earn more than 25k even in their first year (weekends and nights pay more). So your petition would cover some carers, but actually mainly staff like receptionists, secretaries, porters, cleaners etc. Which is of course fine but not sure it's what you intended.

It just shows my real name Richard until it's official and live. Wording is exactly sane as my opening post.

I see what you mean, they are all doing a great job even cleaners constantly cleaning up after patients which isn't very nice. The ground floor assistant nurses and nurses, trainee nurses and those on the low end of the pay scale I would like to see a better starting grade so your right about my target audience.

In my example, an assistant nurse said he was on £19,600 when I asked him and that looked real low to me in relation to what he was doing but maybe as you say with overtime they can bump it up. This was in Stafford, the rate in London would be higher.

The NHS pay bands are here with out of hours supplements here. He was probably a first year band 4 quoting you base pay, but excluding out of hours extras. There is a London bonus too yes.

Also note its not 'overtime' - that's voluntary extra work. Its extra pay for the weekends and nights on your (not-voluntary) schedule.

My personal opinion is that there are some areas where free market mechanics are useful in the NHS, and that staff pay is one of them. At the moment we can't attract enough nurses and so we should be increasing their pay until we can. That is less true of non-clinical staff, as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for your votes so far, two more votes and it goes live, we can but try!

I totally agree on nurse pay, you have to see the pressure they are under first hand to really appreciate how difficult it is. I think politicians of all sides are so detached they just dont see this front line issue or understand why they are leaving.

I have just had a new hip fitted following a no fault RTA, my pelvis smashed in. The nurses on my ward were run ragged with patients doing ECGs, bladder scans, constant observations, drugs monitoring, it goes on. It's totally relentless and they don't stop. This is very skilled work, they need to be alert, on the ball to spot things

Yes staff shortages don't help them either but you have staff working 12.5 hours without even a tea break something has to give here! As I say, on the current pay scale the front end staff are not being looked after.

I suggested 10% increase as a starting point increase for lower level and entry level pay, it should be higher but a positive move in this direction might at least install confidence that in joining the NHS they will be valued

Thanks all
One of my daughters is a Senior Ward Sister on the Cardiac Ward of my local hospital. They are so short-staffed that she has to carry a bleeper on her 24/7 and be on call.

When I hear that, it just isn't right.

So In effect she has to put her life on hold 24/7 carrying a bleeper, so she can't drink socialise or generally relax from the work pressure in case the thing goes off and she has to rush in to support at a moments notice and that's when she's not "officially working" due to staff cuts.

My heart goes out to her devotion, she is obviously a very special person

Situation has to change, they need to be looked after better but moreover receive better recognition to improve new entrants and staff retention, rather than breaking the backs of the sfarr already working

All the very best to you
