The Student Room Group

Car purchase + insurance advice

Hello everyone

So, I moved to UK 4 years ago.
I am from Portugal and I love to drive. I have a car there and insurance is crazy cheap there.

Since I was a student until June, it was unacceptable and impossible to buy a car, let alone pay insurance.

I still see insurances crazy high, or maybe it's just me who doesn't know how to search properly?

I saw I can get cars from £1k-£2k, to get adapted to UK's traffic and different side of the road.

In January I will have my driving license for 5 years, and in September (next year) I will be 25 years old.

At the moment I work full time. £23k/annum, so we are talking about £1500+/month. Thing is I pay rent, food etc and still like to take 300-500/month aside. Minimum of £300.

What are your advices? I would really love to get a car

Thanks

It'll be expensive because you won't have any no claims bonus here. I suggest getting a few insurance quotes on different cars to see what kind of insurance and car combination is affordable for you.

What I feared... :/

How much roughly are we talking about?

Which cars would be better for a good insurance?

How much it costs depends on your personal circumstances. You need to get a quote to find out exactly.

Regarding which cars, you'll need to look at the insurance group of a car. The lower the insurance group is, the cheaper it'll be to insure. You can find out which group a car is in, using the link below:

For low insurance groups (<10), you can see here.

I see... so anything under 10 should be a "good price"?

That "depends", are we talking £1k+ ? :/

Anything under group 10 should be affordable. but yes, it completely depends on you. Where you live, how many years of experience you have, how many miles you plan to do per year, how many years of no claims bonus, etc. I can't / noone can give you a number.
You have the car reg for the polo. Do an online insurance quote through one of the aggregators.

Depends on your area. But 25 y/o with 0 no claims and 5 years experience I would say that looks about right. Try going to some insurance companies that aren't on comparison websites, such as aviva and directline, they might be able to do it cheaper.

bear in mind the top 2 quotes in that screenshot require you to fit a blackbox. I'd recommend going with the 3rd option (Admiral) in that example.

Isn't a blackbox a good thing?

If I don't have problems that would reduce my insurance right?
