Its very hard isn’t it! I managed to shadow a stroke association support group.. but haven’t managed to do anything else! I’m doing an access course 3 nights a week, I work and have a son! I just can’t fit much else in at the moment!!
I have everything crossed for you!! I haven’t sent my application off yet! I’m hoping to send it this weekend!
I suppose it will be good experience to go to as many interviews as you can! I just hope i get one!!! 🤞

Oh wow bless you! I guess I can't complain about my work load haha  Thank you so much! I hope you get all the unis you want- good luck!

Good luck everyone. Don't worry about how much you know. They're looking for potential for the undergraduate course, not the finished article or even the half finished article. We find out on placement how little we actually know even when we've graduated. Until you see things day in day out it's almost impossible to appreciate fully what the role of an SLT is.
All that said, though, the key qualities they're looking for match closely the competencies they expect to see in a fully qualified SLT. And there are plenty of ways to demonstrate those.
Have a look at band five person specifications if you like and try to think of examples where you've done something that demonstrates that quality or skill. That's as good a way as any to prepare for the interviews. Particularly where they run multiple mini interviews each question is targeting a specific thing from those competencies. So make sure you can think of specific and discrete examples for each. Best way you can prepare.

But don't try to sell yourself as knowing it all. I tell my past version of me: you know nothing! Because I really didn't. I knew just enough to know that it interested me and had just enough life experiences to know that I would probably manage certain aspects of the job and the course okay. And that was enough.

Don't underestimate it, definitely, and do try to reflect on how language and swallowing difficulties affect people's lives. Food and conversation are two of the things that make life most enjoyable. It can't be too hard to realise how your quality of life would be diminished if you lost or never had one or both! If it is hard, you're probably applying for the wrong course!

Thanks for this!

I’ve not had an interview yet. My first on is at MMU on the 22nd, when is yours?

Mines the 22nd as well!!! I'll probably see you there!!
Guys, I'm debating over switching one of my choices from manchester to London city. Have any of you been to an open day of these two? Which seems better? Manchester is so far away from me too which is something to consider as it will be so expensive for me to come home and see family!
Sorry for all the questions but any one else who's got an interview at manchester- have they asked you to bring copies of your GCSE certificates? They have more but De Montfort didn't ask for them.

I haven’t been to any open days. I picked Manchester as it’s local. Couldn’t really go further afield because of my little one.

Ahh thank you for this. I’ve been going over what I think they could ask but then I don’t want to come acsoss as overly rehearsed if that make sense.
I’ve been working in an NHS pharmacy for a number of years so I’m hoping I can pull on experiences from that such as showing compassion and adapting communication.
I’ve also worked in schools so that should come in handy.

If you've worked in a pharmacy you may have some quite direct experiences to draw on. Think how a person with a swallowing disorder might need the specialist services of a pharmacist. If you're a dispenser, chances are you've already had experience with dysphagic patients' needs, even if you haven't seen them directly.

It's not about being rehearsed. It's just about being prepared. You can't really rehearse as you don't know what the exact question will be. But you should be aware of the person requirements/competencies of an SLT and be able to relate them to your own experiences. Sounds like you've got a fair few.
Just popping in to wish everyone good luck with applications, this was me 4 years ago and now I'm a qualified SLT  any questions let me know!

Just to say please don't share any specific interview questions on here
I've got an interview at UEA on the 1st December! Anyone else? Has anyone had any interviews yet and can give some advice?

Good luck for your interview. I had one at MMU last week. The only advice I can give really is don’t overthink what they might ask you. I didn’t get asked anything really around what I had prepped for xx

Oh really! I haven't prepped yet but plan to tomorrow! I'm kinda terrified cus I'm terrible at thinking of answers on the spot! Could I ask you if they asked knowledge based questions for you or more just about your values and personality?

I was the same but the people that interviewed me were lovely so that helped me relax. It was a mixture of both really. We were told not to go into detail about the questions but if you look at the nhs constitution that will really help you xx

Yeah I have and I have an interview at Manchester met on the 22nd of this month and then one at the University of Manchester on the 6th December.
I’m going to be shadowing a SLT tomorrow.
I work in a pharmacy and I’m also a qualified teaching assistant so I’m hoping I can relate them to the course somehow.

This whole process is so daunting x

Hi Sam

Have you heard back from Manchester met or university of Manchester regarding your interview?
