The text book states this:
Zn(s) ----(EQUILIBRIUM SIGN) Zn^2+ (aq) + 2e-

Can someone elaborate on how to figure out that Zinc has two electrons in its outer shell in order to lose 2 electrons please? Thankyou!:smile:

It is a first row transition metal, all of which lose their 4s electrons first when forming ions...
Zinc is a first row d-block metal. And Charco correctly states they lose their two 4s electrons first, which is key to your question :smile:

Zinc doesn't fit the definition of a transition metal; we should be careful about this as the definition is expected knowledge at A level.
