Labour's response to Trump's "Britain First" tweets has been crazy

The general tenor of Labour's response has been: Trump is evil, ban Trump from the UK, sever all ties with Trump, publicly berate Trump, etc.

Are Labour seriously saying we should do this to the leader of one of our greatest allies because feelings have been hurt over a couple of unacceptable tweets? The consequences of damaging our relationship with the USA post-Brexit, in terms of economics, military, security intelligence, etc. would be significant.

We tolerate foreign leaders' bigotry and human rights abuses all the time. We don't berate and sever links with the leaders of China, Saudi Arabia, African nations, etc. because of unacceptable things that they do.

Labour's response to anything is just to scream "racist", "sexist", "Islamophobic", etc. They are incapable of putting forth a coherent, sensible argument.

I suppose you would prefer labour to retweet Amy Schumer?
Labour absolutely refuse to countenance any world view other than their own flaccid miserablism.

Nope. The problem with retweeting far right crap that was later proven to be FAKE is clear.

Fake? Ha! Did you watch the videos? How on earth could they have been faked? Britain First knows their stuff.
Well at least Trump doesn’t refer to terrorists as ‘friends’

If Blair had been PM, Hague, IDS, Howard or Cameron would have said the same thing. It is a free hit for an opposition. Governments have to live in the real world, oppositions don't.

This. If Labour were the incumbents right now they would be singing a very different tune, and the Tories would of course use it as a chance to attack their political rival. The fact that it's happening the other way around is meaningless, both parties are just as bad as each other when push comes to shove.

Have they actually formally suggested either of these things? As far as I can see they've just said he shouldn't get a state visit.

They haven't obviously, but in diplomatic terms their proposals are deeply unserious, puerile even.

The invitation to a State visit has already been extended. So to rescind it now would be an unparalleled snub to our supposed closet ally.

Leaving aside the fact that the Queen makes the invitation in a formal sense, so this would embroil her in political controversy, which her Governments are supposed not to do (in our admittedly bizarre system).

What should happen is what will happen. The date for the visit will be put off, although if push come to shove and Trump says he wants to come there is little that can be done about it. He will come.

This stupid and childish grandstanding demonstrates an unfitness to govern. Trump is the POTUS, he represents all Americans, including those who despise him. To publicly deny him a State visit after it has been promised (as punishment for a tweet!) is to insult the whole country, not just him. To what end? To signal our virtue? Laughable.

Above all it is against the national interest, which Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition is supposed to promulgate. He may get re-elected and serve eight years in total. We need America a lot more than they need us. Especially as we leave the EU and need all the friends we can get.

Stupid, childish, against the country's interests and diplomatic madness.

Apart from that Labour are acquitting themselves well on the matter.
or putting it more simply ..., " They couldnt run a piss up in a brewery ".

Are you suggesting that a trade deal with Trump would be anything other than 100% beneficial to the US?

BTW - it is not just Labour who have been speaking against Trump and his latest tweets. It has been MPs from all parties including the Tories. And please don't forget the petition signed by well over 100,000 people trying to stop his state visit.

The man has nothing positive to bring to the table. He divides people and sets them against each other. He is not a uniter. Great leaders are able to unite people. He is not a great leader. He is a selfish populist. If he thinks saying something will win him favour, he will say it regardless of the bigger picture or fall out.

The cuckold left are the embarrassing ones - not caring about major issues such as immigration and Islamic terrorism and instead putting all of their "effort" towards transsexuals and cultural Marxism.

Indeed, people don't think about this stuff critically beyond 'Labour always crying, dem liberal tears'. Were the shoe on the other foot, Tory opposition would be chomping at the bit to deride any Labour government response too.

I should note that Labour were already calling for the visit to be denied before this, so it's not particularly because of this, it's just given them another opportunity to shout about it.

More to the point though, you're talking about what's appropriate etiquette and protocol in the context of someone who has generally shown very little regard for them. The whole visit idea is little more than an ego trip for Trump.

and thus an excellent opportunity to penetrate his thin skin.

Labour should push for a bank holiday on his state visit. :colone:

The fact you just compared the US president to the scum who run Saudi and the various African despots speaks volumes...
