musical theatre. what uni?

I am in final year at college and hoping to go onto further education to
study musical theatre. I have only looked at one so far but wasnt
impressed. I am hoping to apply for an audition to GSA and Central but even if I am successful im not sure i can afford to attend these
establishments so my question is: which universities offer the best
courses for Musical Theatre study.

I have friends at GSA who love it! Drama school wise I'd also recommend Guildhall, LAMDA, Trinity Laban and Rose Bruford. Not to be harsh, but musical theatre is such a competitive course, to stand a chance of getting a good job you do need to be going to a top school as there are so many graduates and very few jobs.

My biggest recommendation is take a look at the actor biographies in West End theatre programmes and see which schools are getting graduate jobs. At the moment the ones which are rising are Bird College, Arts Ed and Urdang. I know people at all three who are doing really well.

I have two friends currently studying at Chichester University doing Musical Theatre. They're definitely enjoying it, but I'm not sure about its employability.

Basically, you really want to be aiming for those London drama schools, there is tons of finance available if you're worried about that. Audition for as many as you can, and you might want to consider sending your application ASAP. My friend's first drama school audition is tomorrow (RADA) and he has another one this Saturday too so auditions are already in swing.

thank you lowza..I have my heart set on GSA but I am realistic and I
know its not going to be easy. Im struggling with my choices for the
UCAS aplication simply because im not sure which UNIs will offer the
best in terms of my needs. Was looking at Rose Bruford but they
dont seem to offer Musical Theatre and more acting. I like your
suggestion of looking at wet end biographies, that is a pretty good
guild. thank you and will research Bird college Arts Ed and Urdang as I honestly have never heard of them. thanks again for you help, much
appreciated.

Hi Bee

Our Musical Theatre open day is coming up on the 1st December. Why don't you come for a visit, join a workshop and find out a bit more about our training and audition process. You can find out more and book a space on our website https://www.trinitylaban.ac.uk/study/musical-theatre. It also includes a ticket to see our 3rd years perform their Christmas show which this year is a new musical called Animus.

Hope to see you there!

Hannah
I know you said you're interested in MT but just in case you consider straight Acting... do not go to Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Management removed two students from the school in 2016 and another in 2013 for admitting they have depression, under the ruse "they were not doing well" when, if you ask any of their tutors and people who actually saw them on a regular basis, they were doing amazingly.

Thank you Hannah I most certainly will look into the 1st December. My
first impression of Universities offering performance arts as a degree
has so far not been great and an establishment offering specialist
training seems a far better option to me.

I am so sad to learn that. Part of my career plan was to get three years of training in Musical Theatre on my CV and then apply for Bristol Old Vic. good pastoral care is so important and we will all need it at some time.
thank you for taking the time to chat
Musical theatre basically is the theatrical or dramatic performance of dance. Now a days most of the musical theatre schools offer online courses. I found Bodens Performing Arts which is situated in uk, Barnet provides the best Musical Theatre Training with spoken dialogue, acting, and songs. This is why most performing artists decide to join here.

thank you alexabrown002. I have not been made away of either of these establishments. I will look into them right away
There are many great schools for musical theatre, all have different specialities though and different career prospects for their students but some great third level musical theatre schools are:
Royal Conservatoire Of Scotland
Urdang Academy
Royal Central School Of Speech and Drama
Arts Ed
London School Of Musical Theatre
Bird College
Laine Theatre Arts
Guilford School Of Acting (GSA)
The MTA
Mountview
The MGA Academy
Performers College
SLP College
London Studio Centre
Bodyworks Dance Company
Millenium Performing Arts
Trinity Laban
Emil Dale Academy
Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts
Italia Conti Arts Centre
MADD College
Masters Performing Arts

These list is in non particular order (literally just random). This list is aimed at people wanting to apply for a BA or Diploma course, although I do believe that some of these schools offer an MA course. I'm not very knowledgeable in MA courses although I do know that great institutions for MA Musical Theatre that are not on the list are Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and The Royal Academy of Music.

is it american musical theatre academy?. I've heard of the school, know someone that goes there she likes it. I don't know the course or school or alumni very well. All I know is I think it's a two year course, and I think you get an opportunity to study abroad in New York for a bit if you want to. As far as course content and alumni I'm not sure about it though.
Are you a triple threat, dancer.singer or singer/actor.

Are you looking for a full BA Hons degree or the Level 6 Trinity Diploma.

Are you looking for professional performance training, or interested in studying musical theatre from a more academic point of view. If the former then you need to ensure that the contact hours are sufficient to get Spotlight Entry and there is a graduate agent showcase.

The attachment is a work in progress of some of the institutions that are around (its not finished yet)
