Hey guys!

I just wanted to start a thread for those of you considering studying Management here at Bath.

I’m Alice and I’m now in my second year on the 4-year Management course. Feel free to ask any questions about the course modules, the type of assessments or life at Bath in general! Also, I’m applying for placements at the moment so if you have any concerns about what this is like then quote me.

I stayed in Quads in first year and I loved it! Living on campus means that nights out at the SU are so easy. If you want to know about Bath nightlife, what it’s like to live in Quads, campus accommodation in general, or if you have concerns about finding housing in second year, I’m here to share hints and tips!

I am a prospective applicant and I have actually applied to the BBA course. What particularly attracted me to Bath was the placement year and I have noticed that a few placements are offered at investment banks(JP Morgan, UBS). What I want to know is how many places are usually on offer for these particular placements and how competitive they usually tend to be? Are they mainly Back Office roles or do they encompass Front Office roles as well?

I am also slightly concerned by the fact that Bath had quite a few places available in clearing last year which was the first time in a while it happened. Couple this in with the decline in applications to Bath this year, it seems as though the standards of the university are dropping from an outside perspective. How good is the teaching in the school of management? Do you personally feel like the quality of the university is dropping?

Great to hear you’ve sent off your application.

Bath has a great placement scheme and most students at the university will complete a year in industry as part of their degree which means we're all in it together. It gets you practised in advance of applying for graduate schemes and sometimes students are offered a grad place on the back of their placement.

On the BBA course, I believe you are welcome to source your own placement, however Bath has many established connections with companies who will source Bath students to fill their placements - BBA is a very well-respected course among employers. Students that have already been on placement say that they were given a lot of responsibility on projects so you will be challenged in front office roles!

In terms of how many placements are normally on offer, I am not certain of a definite number and I expect this changes year on year but I will try and find this out for you.

Investment banking is a popular choice among students and there are certainly opportunities with JPMorgan, UBS, BNY Mellon etc. which is really exciting! The placements can be very competitive as students are of a very high calibre at Bath. However, there is plenty of help regarding CVs, cover letters and interview skills to help you stand out. Employers understand not everyone has experience of working in a bank, but they are keen to see your passion for working for them and appreciate transferable skills, many of which you will gain on your course. If you are really interested in banking, I would recommend using your time at university to take up opportunities to get some finance experience – perhaps becoming a treasurer for a university society. This may help you to stand out in your applications.

Personally, I have not noticed a drop in the quality of teaching. Much like college or sixth form, there are often lecturers that you find more engaging or easier to learn from but I would say that at Bath they are all very willing to help if you ask. Most lecturers have dedicated office hours for you to speak to them about any concerns, coursework etc.

Can I ask if the Management with Marketing course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), or if any of the courses from the School of Management is?

Hi Tian,

In answer to your question, the Management courses are not accredited by the CIM. However, to my knowledge, none of the degree courses are accredited.

If you were to undertake a CIM qualification when employed as a marketer, it may be the case that you will be exempt from certain aspects of the qualification, having completed these as part of your degree.

Hi Alex,

Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner, hopefully I can still help.

Great to hear you're considering applying to Bath, I really love the uni and was won over when I visited it, so maybe try and come to an applicant day if you receive an offer.

For Management with Marketing, the placement year is compulsory. However, for Management, there is both a 3 year and a 4 year course, making the placement year optional.

I chose to apply for the 3 year course, but later decided to add the placement year. A window opens for you to change course as there is a common first year for Management, Management with Marketing and International Management, so there is flexibility!

However, they do say it is much easier to remove you from the placement course than to add you, so if you have already applied, don't be afraid to ring and say you'd like to change to the 4 year now, as the earlier you say, the easier it is for them to amend.

In first year, when all of us shared the same modules, there were about 150 people altogether, so the courses are quite popular.

I think they will be keen on you achieving a B in GCSE Maths, as there are some modules which require good understanding of numbers. There is maths help on campus if you are worried about this. The same goes for the B in English as there are reports and essays to write!

Finally, don't be put off having had no work experience, as there are plenty of opportunities at university to either work, join a sports team, join a society, be on a society committee, be a student ambassador and more. I would definitely try to get involved in some of these things, because it's the ideal opportunity and it gives you examples to write about in your applications for placements (should you decide to go ahead with this) and makes your university experience more than just about your course!

You can gain a lot of the same skills from playing a sport as working. I was really worried that everyone would have done internships etc. but most people have just had casual work so don't worry too much, you won't be alone.

I've never studied business before..!
Will I get help finding a placement?
Where do people go on placement?
What's the nightlife like?
Do people go out in Bath or does everyone just study all the time?
Bath is so sporty... does it matter if I don't like sport?

Hey,

Sorry it has been a while since your post, I am now back on student room after summer!

I'm on my placement year at the moment and have friends doing all sorts of things. There are opportunities to work in both large and small organisations, both in and outside of London. When I was hunting for my placement, there was a huge range of roles from marketing to finance to supply chain management.

I actually found the amount of placement options quite overwhelming because I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to do but the choice means that you will definitely find something that catches your eye.

I would recommend looking at this page: Placement Companies which shows you some of the more well-known organisations that offer placements. I know people who have gone to PWC, EY, Loreal, Unilever, Paypal, Disney and lots more. There are so many places I hadn't even heard of before, but they offered really interesting roles. If you wanted to have a browse, we used sites like RateMyPlacement.com and Target Jobs to keep up with placement releases.

Also Bath host a careers fair each year where a whole range of different employers come and visit for 2 days. Once the list is available I would recommend having a browse so that you can see what sort of placement options are out there. There are often Bath students at the fair with these employers who can tell you all about their experiences too which is really helpful.

Hey guys!

Now we are in October I imagine everyone is thinking hard about UCAS applications. I just want to remind you all that I am here to answer any questions you might have about applying to university. I know it can be a stressful time and I certainly found it all quite overwhelming as there is so much choice!

I have studied Management at Bath for two years now and have experience with placement applications and the level of support provided by the university, so if you have any questions or concerns about the degree, as well as general questions about accommodation, nightlife, jobs, campus food, placements, second year housing, buses etc. please post away!

Remember there is still plenty of time to apply and try not to feel pressured to make any quick decisions just because people around you are moving forward with their applications - I applied at the end of November and received an offer on the Management course.

Thanks for your question!

The Management course at Bath is very competitive and the flexibility on entry requirements really depends on the number of students in your year of application who meet the terms of their offers. The entry requirements are also reflective of the difficulty of the course at Bath, so they are there to make sure people will cope with its demands! I appreciate that one point off seems like nothing, but there are always applicants who meet the requirements and we cannot guarantee that there will be any leeway.

i want to take a course about the business and management but also with marketing, is it any course like this at bath ? and if yes are they all together? and also is it easy to get accepted ? even if i am not strong in math? and i also wanted to ask you a general question, i am lost between business management and digital marketing. i love with the both of them, but i dont know which i should chose and start to study. i want in the future to open my own business with my own product. so what do you think i should take, which one will be good for my future job ( taking in consideration that i am not very strong in math) . and also a last question, like i just said i am not very good at math, is this going to affect my grades? make me struggle in theses courses ? thank you

Thanks for your questions – I will try and help you with as much as I can :smile:

Management with Marketing at Bath
Firstly, Bath do offer a Management with Marketing course which covers core business modules and allows you to specialise in marketing in your second and third year. You can have a look here at the entry requirements, module and placement information which should give you a better idea of what the course involves. Generally I have found the Management course really well-rounded and relevant so far – we do a lot of group work including presentations and there is a lot of support to help us become more employable e.g. CV help, mock interviews and good connections with companies who are quite often on campus to chat to.

Just a couple of things to note…

- First year modules are compulsory and common between all those studying Management, Management with Marketing and International Management so there is often the flexibility to change.

- A placement year is compulsory for Management with Marketing and International Management, however it is optional for Management. I am currently on my placement and loving it as it is very different from studying and, more than anything, really good to get a feel for working in an office environment. The application side of it also forced me to think more about what I wanted to do, made me work on my CV and practise writing cover letters. It also gave me more confidence with interviews which was something I found really daunting!

Entry Requirements
As long as you meet the entry requirements and submit a strong application, you will be in with a good chance of receiving an offer.

Course
I felt exactly the same confusion when I was looking at courses in business, as there are so many variations and it is not always easy to work out how they differ. I chose to study Management in its broadest form as I was very new to the subject and I didn’t have a clue which area I would enjoy most.

If you are looking to start your own business, it will definitely be beneficial to learn about all elements of management. There is always the option to specialise later on as you get more freedom with choosing modules and you could consider a placement year once you have a better idea of what you enjoy – for example, I chose to do a marketing placement even though I am not on the marketing course. I even have friends studying Natural Sciences at Bath who were accepted for marketing placements which shows the course you choose should not limit you to one career path.

I would have real look in to the kind of modules you would be studying on either of these courses, as this is ultimately what you will be doing day-to-day. In my experience, I have enjoyed studying a broad subject as you are not always writing essays or always doing maths – there is a good balance to keep you interested!

Maths
I can assure you that you would not be alone with your concern about maths. At Bath, first year modules do include finance, accounting, analytics etc. as you cannot really escape numbers in the world of business. However, there is a lot of support for students including MASH for drop-ins, your lecturers, course-mates etc. Also, subjects like accounting tend to be new to everybody, and I remember us all struggling and helping each other through it. If you find it hard, the chances are everyone does!

Marketing is definitely a popular choice for students who don’t like maths but want to study management, as it is considered the more creative part of business. In second year you have more freedom to choose your modules and can pretty much avoid numbers. Although, if you are keen to open your own business, it will be beneficial to work on it. If you do discover you enjoy the numbers later on, data analytics is a huge part of digital marketing which might be something to consider!

What is the nightlife like in Bath? I really enjoy the feeling of going out in a busy, big city and I'm wondering if going out in Bath, or catching a train to go out in Bristol, is going to be as enjoyable as I might hope.

Bath isn't a big or (at least until the Christmas Markets arrive) particularly busy city - however Bristol is extemely close by (about 15 minutes by train) and a popular destination for Bath students looking for a big night out. Bath has something on every day of the week in terms of night life and the SU nights are also very popular such as the sports night (Score) and Happy Hour. Although Bristol does have a livlier and more varied choice of nightlife, many of my friends who enjoy going to Bristol on a night out say even though they enjoy having somewhere so big and busy so close by, they like the fact they are able to have the escape of living somewhere a fair bit quieter and manageable like Bath.
