Hi both, have you guys find out more information about the prerequisites for taking certain modules? I am thinking of emailing imperial to double check few modules that I am planning to take but thought I would ask you guys first.

Thanks!

Ryan

I'm not sure Ryan, do post in here if you find out, I'm curious to know.

Hi!
I am new to this forum.
I was really excited to find this discussion because I also intend to redirect my career path by studying computer science.

I am a medschool graduate from EEA.I applied to conversion and to undergraduate program just in case I do not meet the requirements for the Msc. As for now, I applied to imperial and glasgow for the conversion program. I also submitted an application to UCL but I have not paid the fees yet. For the undergraduate programs, I sent my candidature through ucas to Imperial, Edinburgh, Manchester, ucl, and royal holloway.

I do not know what to expect because my background is very different from most of the people who apply to these programs. I saw that the majority of the candidates major in economics or have a STEEM background which I think is a huge advantage to study computer science.

I took programming classes before entering medschool that I really enjoyed and I am now trying to catch up by reading books and following online courses such as the ones you mentioned (harvad introduction to computer science). During elementary and high school, I took elective advanced mathematics and physics courses. However, my grades were nothing too exceptional.

I have to note that in my country, grades are not that important in high school. The process of selection for undergraduate studies is made during the first year(s) of those studies. To summarize, it is easy to enter an undergraduate program in my country, you only need to have the baccalaureate but hard to pass the first year(s) examinations.I am stressed regarding my grades during high school and medschool. They do not set me apart from other students.

However, I think that my personal statement and my recommendation letters are the strong points of my application.I hope to hear positive response soon.

I will apply to more conversion programs, notably Brimingham and Bristol.

In case, this redirection is not working, I will pursue my medicine formation knowing that I least I tried.

Congratulations to all of you that already received positive responses and to the others hang in there :-)

Anyone waiting to hear back from Imperial MSc Computing, I applied both references received 8th Jan, I know that's quite recent but haven't heard back yet makes me wonder considering some people on this thread heard back within 1-2 weeks haha. So is anyone else waiting to hear back from Imperial?
Hi, I have received the imperial offer in 7th November and already payed the deposit.

I'm about to apply to either Bristol or Bath. Both have pros and cons.

Bristol:
- Seems higher in most rankings (though not all and only very slightly).
- Far more orientated towards software development, which is where I want to go career wise.

Bath:
- Much cheaper!
- Seems more academically focussed - could be seen as a pro as will stretch me more, whereas the practical stuff I can learn on the job.

Motivation for why you want to do it is of course important. I'm just past 40 and leaving a government job where I manage Information Systems and want a career switch to a job where I actually create/design them (e.g. software development). I've done some amateur coding (i.e. published an Android app on Google Play) but I want to cement my skills and frankly spend a year devoted purely to learning something I enjoy. Although far from rich, I've built up enough of a cushion over my career that I can do this without financial hardship.

To be honest non-academic factors might feature higher. Bristol has much more affordable housing, and assuming I stay in the city I graduate from, Bristol also seems to have lots more software jobs. Both are great cities in their own way though.

Interested in what other people think.

I'm not that impressed by the content of the Bristol course. I think Birmingham, Imperial, Glasgow etc. to name but a few have a better selection of content for someone aspiring to go into software development as such, plus optional modules. It's no doubt a good university and the course does look like it will suffice to give you a grounding in software dev, but IMO there's better. Were it not for the cost, I'd have picked Imperial but as it stands it's between Birmingham and Glasgow for me.

Hey dude that’s awesome! Well done, mind if I ask how long they took to give you an offer after having both references submitted, also what did you study for undergrad and what grade did you get? I’m really nervous, I want to go there so bad haha!

Thank you mate. The last of my reference was submitted in 3rd November. I study economics and reached about 77 in my grade. Hope it can help you.

Wow so you got an offer in 4 days that’s amazing haha, did you do any internships, can I ask what university your undergrad was in?

Actually, I was shocked when I got the offer. I have some internship experience but all of them just a little bit related to data analysis. My essay must help me a lot, because one essay is analysed in machine learning. And I am in Birmingham University.

Yeah that sounds awesome dude, I'm really interested in Machine learning too, I am at university of Southampton, studying mechanical engineering, I have had two software internships both involving machine learning (one research one practical), I really hope I get in, I only just scraped a score of 70 in my second year, I got 82 in my first year but the first year doesn't count towards my final grade at my university.

It should be no problem for you. Your background is really good. You must can receive the offer.

Do imperial not interview anymore for this course? I'm just hoping I don't get a straight rejection lol

In 3rd year of Warwick maths, got 72% last year....and far far worse in 1st year lmao. At least I improved rather than the other way round, but my transcript is very confusing to say the least. I guess you could say I'm on track for a 1st though. Done a fair few programming/CS modules too and those have generally been my better scoring ones. Haven't done any related work yet but I have got myself an internship for this coming summer in software engineering.

Sounds pretty solid Warwick is pretty respected for maths, yeah Im not sure how much consideration they give to the first year grade, I got 82 first year and 70 second year was hoping I would get a bit higher second year and hoping its not a reason for rejection, Im hoping my work experience will pull through for me tbh, did a research internship at my university in first year and a software internship at a big company second year, If I do get rejected I will just have to assume its because of my second year grade, It's only been two weeks since they received both references but nervous since some people have received offers within one week, How long have you been waiting for man?
Every time I get an email, I immediately check it thinking it could be something related to my application, and it just ends up being something silly haha, anyone else know that feel?

Computer conversion course is waste of money. Just specialize directly. Its important to know the specific modules covered in the course. Remember technology is always evolving.

RELOADED !

What do you mean? Its hard to specialise if you don't know the fundamentals
