Car insurance Advice "Insure the Box" vs "Tesco Bank Box"

Hello every one.

Im looking to get insurance for my car, first time driving. Could anyone tell me if they have experience with Insure the box or Tesco bank box. Before anyone tells me that i should not get a box please know that without Box lowest insurance is coming in at £3800 which i cant afford, With insure the box i can get it for about 1500 and with tesco Bank box about 1600.

Can anyone let me know which one is better if they have experience. I am just a little bit concerned as some people say they keep sending warnings even if you drive very good and within speed limits and cancel the policy.

I will be doing less then 4000 miles so that should not be an issue. I only mostly travel to work which is about 5 miles both ways.

Regards

Im with tesco black box and have been now for almost a year, my insurance will be almost half when i renew in a month. Ive had no issues with tesco or the black box throughout my insurance and they were definitely the cheapest insurance for me. Would definitely recommend them xx

The low policy price is a false hope for most, because they'll end up charging you extra fees half the time. It's your choice, but it'll also be your loss.

Extra fees on what?

Box installation, removal, and transfer.
Penalties for poor driving habits.
Penalties for mileage overages.

Not to forget the lifelong impact that a policy cancellation could have if that ever came about, which telematics insurers enjoy to throw around like sweets.

Look through Cars and Motoring and you will see HUNDREDS of threads supporting my argument.

Im not disagreeing with your argument but from my personal experience with tesco black box i didnt have to pay for my black box to be installed nor will i have to pay for it to be removed.
You will have to pay if you go over the mileage limit however tescos minimum miles policy is 6000 miles which is much less than what the person who started the thread will be doing.
Tesco have caused no problems for me and i have constantly got 98/99/100 bonus miles each month. Insurers like marmalade will definitely add in extra costs elsewhere and penalise you for every little mistake but ive had no nor heard of many problems with tesco insurance

And yet, there are hundreds of threads directly contradicting that. It often seems that these silly little boxes have a mind of their own.

No one should resort to taking out telematics insurance when bog standard policies are perfectly affordable if one does their homework.

The OP is saying that £1,500 is affordable to them, so yes, it is definitely possible to get an affordable policy without telematics by doing your homework.

For the sake of being able to drive a measly total of 5 miles a day, paying out 1600 quid on insurance seems excessive to say the least. You could buy yourself a pushbike for £100 from Halfords and have done with it, or even just walk. You should probably be asking yourself whether you really need this car or not, before you take the gamble of a black box policy on it.
Get your quotes and phone up someone like Adrian Flux and tell them your quotes and they'll most likely find one lower. The box they give you will only apply to your renewal cost so it doesn't do anything to your current years.
£3,800 without a black box, what insurance providers are you even looking at?!

I already had a car to learn in when I passed, so I just upgraded my insurance with my current provider. Mine worked out about £1,090 for the year. WITHOUT a black box. I looked at comparison sites before hand, even the ones with the black box cost more than that. But even then, the ones without a black box were nowhere near £3,000

Hi I have looked at all comparison websites confused, uswitch, moneysupermarket. Also tired Aviva which quoted £5000. also called adrian flux and they couldn't do any better then £3800.

I guess will have to just go with a black box for first year no other choice.

Of all the awful aspects of black box policies I personally think the mileage controls are the worst.

I cannot imagine paying all that money to insure, as well as buy and run, a car, and then, when considering making a particular trip, having to think about whether my insurer would permit it, or require additional payments from me with attached charges. You decide you want a run down the motorway at the weekend to see a friend in the next city and you've already burned through your allowance for the week.
Please for the love of god listen to Tom, or even read the thread today from someone who's just had their insurance cancelled on a box and has come to the conclusion if he finds any insurance for around £4000 - he's onto a winner. Granted, he was speeding with a box, even though you shouldn't really speed without one. The difference is speeding with a box is a life-long cancellation, speeding without one and getting caught (assuming you don't kill anyone, also, please don't speed) is 3 points and a fine. You can always replace money (eventually). You will eventually lose those 3 points. You will never get rid of a cancellation. Ever. This includes doing 80-90 on the motorway in flow with driving conditions, your black box will hate you for it, I cannot imagine life sitting in the slow lane doing 50-70 every single time for an entire year. I recognise that I've just said not to speed, there's a difference between speeding, and then having the choice between doing well below the limit in the slow lane and having to keep diving out to let people in from slip roads or hogging the middle lane whilst everyone around you is trying to consistently do 80 to keep the flow.

Go and do what I did and find a policy specialist, you'd be surprised. Just don't take out any stupid all excess policies under the illusion that it's cheap insurance. Please listen to @IWMTom , he's been here long enough to see enough lives ruined by those cheaping out by getting a box. Lord almighty I've been here barely 3 months and I've seen some posters reduced to tears realizing what a terrible mistake they've made, and sometimes it's probably not even something they did.

You must be looking to insure the wrong car for your circumstances then...

From my experience with my friends, they end up getting a cheap car to buy, and then fork out an extra 2-3k or have to get box insurance, whereas if they'd spent a bit more on the car, even the difference in the costs between box/non-box, as well as the future yearly savings on the insurance then it's still better off... (even though it's not necessarily necessary to have to spend more on a car to get one which will inherently have cheaper insurance...)

Not to mention it takes the roads you drive on into account. I live in a rural area and have to drive down narrow country roads, something a black box would hate me for.

It works for some people, but others it's worth spending out the extra ££££ if you can

What kind of car have you got if you don't mind me asking? And the size of the engine? -- It must be in a high insurance group to warrant that much
I use hastings smartmiles black box and although they seem to be the worst company for people altogether when it comes to warning messages I have had no problem. Granted I do stick to the speed limits harshly, but the way I see it is that it is forcing me to be a safer driver than I was driving on a learner license in my parents car.

Installation was free for me, not sure about removal. Insurance alongside adding both parents on the car was £1100 with the box. It would be over £2000 without and I was unable to afford that. Whether the black box will be forgiving to you will depend on how much to test standards you drive and how much you drive. It has given me a chance to have low insurance on renewal and for that I am happy.

I read a lot of the scare stories that people write about black boxes but it doesnt seem all bad as long as the box is not faulty. But if you want to drive with complete freedom and more like your general everyday driver then dont get a box. It is about deciding what is more important.
