Trotskyist Thugs attack JRM at university

In this thread Leftists are apparently Nazis, communists under the cult of Corbyn. They've listed that JRM and people with his views are unwelcome at university - that's not a threat, that's a public statement by the students that he's not welcome.

JRM is supports trident, arguably making him a warmongerer. You dont think they should be allowed to criticise politicians?

I never said that he was threatened did I? I mearly said that they (at QMUL) were trying to stop him from coming (not welcome) the socialist society is a small minority, so they do not speak for all in saying he should not attend. Of course you should be allowed to criticise a politician when they do something wrong or you disagree with. Shouting at them you’re a racist though isn’t getting anyone anywhere.

'I got punched in the face for no reason'

No reason. My word, the gall of these people.

The protestors were trying to stop the Jacob have free speech. Furthermore I think they came to cause trouble. You don’t turn up to a campus debate in a balaclava Andy sunglasses if your just turning up for a chat.

I think you must realise that it is absurd to regard this sort of mindless interruption as promotive of any meaningful ideal of 'free speech'.

Anyway, I've dealt with this before:

I have trouble believing that you people truly believe that ruining an event like this for a gathered audience of interested students, replacing actual considered speech with thoughtless yelling, is beyond criticism as a mere expression of free speech.

In terms of the cultural, as opposed to legal, ideal of free speech, what is actually worth something is the genuine exchange and consideration of ideas. That is what I wish universities would take stronger steps to promote, as I've indicated. This sort of display does not fall under that.

In legal terms, the protesters should not be subject to any state sanction for this sort of display. Universities, however, are private institutions. They of course do not have to do anything, but in my view they should take it upon themselves to take such steps against students as are necessary to maintain their ideals of free and open debate.

More a fascist one ? :beard::fuhrer:
JRM is the same person who is strongly against abortion but profits from the abortion pill his company invests in.

He is a hypocritical, fascist privileged man he is the type of person taintiing society.
I definitely condemn this attack but you can sympathise with the attendees.

I can just imagine him being the sort of person trying to get work houses for orphans brought back in.

Yeah, it's dickish tbf but the thing seems blown out of proportion. Depends if they do represent the students (say collecting signatures or getting a large number outside protesting).

On the one hand - you could just spin this into "oh, so because they were certain clothes it means they're thugs" - transpose that into women on nights out or in hijabs.

Seriously though, I dont think they did go in to fight but to disrupt (still ****) - could be that they didn't want anyone to recognise them?

Not the same as nights out or hijabs though I think. The point I’m trying to rather poorly make is this. Say you were at a political speech, if people turned up at the back with their faces hidden you wouldn’t trust their intentions would you?

True. Remember seeing Milo Yian at some uni in the US and they did the opposite, left them and then they stayed the whole event (although the crowd was given stick back)

Lose/Lose really
jrm is going to be the next prime minister, tread him with respect

I'm pretty sure free speech isn't jailing poeple who protest against the government.

I tend to agree with you, there is however a fine line between a peaceful protest and shouting abuse into people’s faces.

Again, all I can really do is quote myself:

I was at UWE the same time as the ex-student, was part of the Mental Health Campaign with him. It's pretty pathetic, really, a non-story where you can't even tell if anyone punched anyone else let alone who threw the first one. Just a scuffle with arms flailing everyone, it's clear that JRM was trying to break the thing up rather than attacking himself.

Turns out some right-winger punching a woman in the face is what started it. Where are all the fearless 'free-speech' defenders from this thread now? Surely the right deserves just as much criticism from you Rational™ Sceptics™.

Pretty sure these people turning up at the event and trying to ruin it for everyone else is what started it.
