Degree apprenticeships

I was just wondering how degree apprenticeships work:

Can I go on to a degree apprenticeship straight after college?

Do you still graduate with a qualification of that of a uni student?

Is it worth considering?

Hey there!

You certainly can do a degree apprenticeship straight after college. All you need is proof of your A-Level grades.

Degree apprenticeships will come with a Bachelor's Degree (mine is in Digital and Technology solutions), which is the same as the students at university.

I started last October but I can say that so far it is worth considering. The job will take priority and it is up to you to manage how to complete the degree work on top of your full-time job. I do admit that it is hard work but if you're willing to put in the effort, you certainly will reap the rewards from it.

Hey!!

Thanks for the reply!

So with the degree apprenticeships do you have to go into a university during the week? And complete all the same work that those on the course but not on the apprenticeship do?

With some degree apprenticeships, you may be required to go to a university once a week (@squirrology should be able to share some insight into that). Instead, I actually do my lectures online either at home or at work in my downtime; each week, I go through some online lectures, complete exercises and do some further reading on the subject. I also have ongoing assignments that I need to complete, such as a networking assignment and a work-based portfolio.

The BSc Digital and Technology Solutions Degree is different compared to let's say Computer Science as the former is a specialised apprenticeship degree that focuses on modules applicable to your job role (e.g. we get a Data Analyst, Software Engineer and Networking Engineer route). In the D&T degree, we get some core modules, optional modules and an ongoing assignment, whether that be a dissertation or work-based assignment/project/portfolio.

Can I ask how did you find your apprenticeship? Did they advertise it or did you approach the company?

I applied to a few apprentices via https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship and an apprenticeship provider (QA Apprenticeships) contacted me regarding a few opportunities. Since I was on their system, I received calls pretty much every day until they let me know of one that stood out.

My uni course is on block release, so I do 5 weeks at work and then 1 full week at uni. It will vary by your company.

It depends on the degree apprenticeship provider. I go to University once a week (Every week) - There was one occasion where we had a 2-week block of lessons, where we had to go to the university every day for two weeks, but except for that we have been going to University every Monday and working Tuesday - Friday.

I attend University 9 to 6, and we have two, 2-hour lectures and 2 Tutorial sessions. We have lecturers with the Full-Time students (Who study computer science etc.), but we have the tutorials with just the company Apprentices only (For example, the Barclays students attend their tutorials, and we have our tutorial sessions). I believe the Barclays students also have to attend university on the weekend as well. We do complete the same work and take the same exams as the Full-Time students, but we also have work set tailored to our job roles on the apprenticeship.
