Funding for an additional module

Hello, my husband is studying social work and has failed a placement (year two) he’s currently in year 3 doing all the additional year 3 work but has re taken a year two placement this year which he has passed no problem. But it means in September when he should have qualified he now has to do a third year placement which is part of a ‘module’ and will run for roughly 100 days, September to April ish with a few days study in between.

He started a degree when he was 18 and did one full year before having to leave as his parents split up and he needed to pay the mortgage on their house and then he never went back. So, he’s had the ‘four years’ of Student Finance. Will he be able to get any additional help with the fees or maintenance loan for the remaining module next year?

If we don’t he will literally have no income for 7 months and we will really struggle financially.

The rules regarding previous study states that students are entitled to the ordinary duration of their course plus 1 extra year, minus any previous study. Remaining years of ordinary entitlement will be awarded in the final years of the course. This means if the remaining entitlement for a 3 year course is 2 years, then the student would receive full funding in years 2 and 3. In year 1, in this case, they would received a Maintenance Loan and Supplementary grants.
If your Husband has had to repeat study and there has been extenuating circumstances he may want us to consider these circumstances when making our calculation, also known as their Compelling Personal Reasons (CPR).

He would need to send a letter to their Award Authority (SFE) detailing their CPR along with any evidence of their mitigating circumstances.

The above list is not exhaustive and any evidence that can support the students claim should be sent to us for consideration. In some circumstances one piece of evidence may not be sufficient, therefore we would recommend that the student sends as much evidence in as possible.

Thanks for the reply, he’s done 1 full year of study in 2008 (ish) funded by SFE

He’s now on his third year of a new degree all funded SFE.

If we submit evidence of him having to withdraw from uni because of his parents divorce and taking on mortgage payments ect that might count as EC.

But, if it doesn’t will he still be able to apply for maintenance loan but no tuition fees is that right? Just because you mentioned in year 1 he wouldn’t get the funding or whatever but he’s already done 3 years it’s just the retake module we want to know if he will be eligible for anything.
