Hate uni - making me depressed

I hate uni, the course itself is going okay, I'm getting ok grades at the moment, 1st, 2.1 and 2.2 in 2 subjects. But hoping to get overall at least 2.1 at end of the year. (1 of my 2.2's was down to groupwork letting me down and messing me up). But anyway classes are going fine and there's no problem with them, apart from the low class times, like only 4 lectures a week and most weeks no seminars.

I hate uni, not because of the course, I think i can get good grades. It's just the life in general. I picked this uni above lower ranked ones I loved because of rankings. I SO regret that decision now, but can't change anything cos I'm already tied down with accommodation for next year. Otherwise I'd have dropped out already, and would have applied to a different one.

I don't have hobbies or friends here. I used to do boxing, at a local club and made friends there with locals, not uni students, I loved it and was good at it, but I've had to quit it cos I'm scared of brain damage. Otherwise, I have no hobbies, have no motivation to play my old guitars, and no idea what other things to do. I also have no friends here at uni. I'm too different, I don't drink and don't go clubbing, I just don't enjoy it and feel like a complete weirdo and depressed. Like everyone I know does it but I don't like it.

I hate uni because of this life.. no friends, no hobbies. Work yes fine, but wish I'd have gone to a different uni. This whole life is making me feel depressed.

Anyone got any suggestions to make me feel better?
Let this show future students that league tables are NOT important! Once you get to uni you will realise everything in the league tables is very irrelevant in practise.

If you are only in 1st year, then maybe just work for the rest of the year and switch universities. If in 2nd/3rd year then maybe just deal with it, get your degree and carry on with life.

I can understand how ya feel. I don't drink or go clubbing either, so that kinda makes a lot of things exclusive, no matter what uni you go to.

I would suggest that life wouldn't be much different at another uni, unless it's significantly culturally different, like London vs non-London for example.

The only thing that really remedies these sorts of situations best is by meeting new people, and going in with a fresh attitude, be it through new societies (cheesy), or getting involved in other things.

At my uni, we started up a society for those who don't like drinking or clubbing, to find others who had that in common too, so maybe that's worth a shot - we started with a Facebook group and just posted about it in other places.

I think that a lot of your sadness is probably coming from how lonely you perceive yourself to be, and how your life is compared to others. Maybe try to forget about everything for a week, and think about things that you've always wanted to do instead. Then begin doing them, and slowly join other societies and groups that have those things in common.

If you are really miserable, you can try switching course/uni, but talking to others and just forcing yourself to be around others will really help.
You are in control of your own life. I understand what it's like when life feels just 'meh' but honestly you are whining. You're lucky to be in a position where you actually enjoy your course (that's more than many students have) and as for friends and hobbies? What's stopping you? Find a new hobby. Talk to people. Join a society. Who cares if you don't like drinking or clubbing? There's more to uni than that and you'd be surprised how many students aren't all that into that aspect of uni life.

If you feel depressed, go and talk to a doctor because they can help. But my advice is that the only person who can make a difference here is you. You need to make the choice to improve your life. Going to a different uni won't change your interests or guarantee you friends, and you won't always be happy anywhere (everything has it's ups and downs). It sounds like you're seeing changing unis as the classic 'grass is greener on the other side', but to be honest a uni is a uni. You get a mix of people from all backgrounds with widely varying interests and hobbies. I'm at uni in the middle of nowhere and there's still loads of people that are all about clubbing and drinking. Life is what you make of it. Things often aren't perfect (whether it's the location, course/job or people) but it doesn't mean you can't tip the balance in favour of a positive experience. Constantly running away and making fresh starts doesn't fix your problems, they have a habit of coming back unless you face them

WOW thank you, I think this is really how I am and this is good advice, thank you.

I'm not sure what to try with new hobbies. I LOVED boxing and hate that I stopped going.. I'm just scared of brain damage. But it feels like I'm killing myself by not going.

I could start playing guitars again, it's something I took lessons in while I was in high school, but never practised or was committed to when I was younger. But I think it'd be cool if I learnt how to play.

But apart from them, I don't know. There are many societies and TONS of different sport clubs at my uni. There's just so many of them that I don't know where to start. I know I should do sports for the enjoyment rather than to be good, but so many here I don't know which to start or have a go at.

I did meet great people in boxing. But that wasn't with uni students and wasn't in a uni club.

Yeah, I think maybe you're right with perceiving myself lonely and by comparing my life to others, which seem so happy and great. I will give it a break and give some stuff a go, thank you.

It's just that there are so many different stuff on offer by the uni, all kinds of sports, and societies, stuff I've never thought of before and I don't know where to begin or which to go for.

Thank you for you advice
What uni are you at? If you don't mind saying. If brain damage was the only thing holding you back then I'd suggest trying a new hobby, another sport or even something like a cooking club or language club. I'd also really recommend a part time job, preferably at a shop/bar where other young people work. So easy to make friends at work because you spend all day together. Will also get you out of your room and have something to focus on.
ok well first of it's great that you're enjoying your course and your studies, because imo the social life is the easy part to do

ik what it's like to not fit in anywhere around our classmates ( hell i was that kid in yr 7 who rather chill playing xbox then go outside at night and cause trouble at maccies XD) in your case it's the whole drinking and partying aspect , which is good because you don't risk making a fool of yourself on a night out

i'm not at uni yet but i don't really plan to go to nightclubs or bar drinking (definitely not gonna be popular enough to go to parties either XD) so i would suggest spending some time at the gym a little , not only will it help build your confidence but it can help clear your mind and have a distraction from everything else

or you could join a society in your uni and find people of similar interests with you like boxing, or maybe plan a group activity with your housemates to get to know each other more like a theme park or a movie

hope this helped

Liverpool, University of Liverpool.

Yeah, the fear of brain damage is the only thing holding me back from boxing. It's horrible that I can't do that because I loved it. I could and would love go back there but don't know if I should.

They sound like really good ideas  I'd like to learn another language, to learn to cook better would be cool too and could do with the money from a part time job. Thank you

This is the one thing I don't like about university in our country. We pay so much £££ but get very very little contact hours. 'Independent study'? Pfft. In the US they get much better tuition. What subject are you doing? If you're doing, say for instance, Computer Science, you can enrich your timetable with online programming bootcamps and technical internships.

You can't go back on that decision now. But I can tell you that you didn't make a mistake choosing a higher ranked university. In the long term it will be beneficial. If you feel unfulfilled you can always go to another university and do a masters degree later on.

The no friends phenomena we see on this website is strange. Idk I just think its the way uni is set up that can make it difficult to get friends.
Low contact time + lecture-only course = Can be hard to make friends. Honestly, its only the shallow students who will look down on you for not clubbing and drinking. The rest of the population looks down on alcoholics and binge drinkers so don't worry.

Please don't feel depressed. Its a temporary situation and it will pass. Start focusing on your intended career, get relevant work experience and certifications so you know when you graduate you'll be walking into a well-paying job.

A smaller one, friendly, smaller classes, lower ranked maybe to get rid of the elitests here who think they're superior to students of other unis just because of my uni being higher ranked.

But a smaller one, friendlier, smaller classes, with plenty of stuff to do there, maybe in the country or in a small place instead of a city.

Yeah exactly! I study business management and last week, only got 7 hours of teaching. Now they talk about the strikes coming to the uni, and only 1 of our lecturers isn't going on strike, reducing teaching hours to a single lecture a week and I think that's RIDICULOUS considering the money we're paying. I thought it was crazy enough to pay this much for just 7 teaching hours a week, but with the lecturers going on strike too (so even less than half of that per week) it's ridiculous.

Yeah, I think I might if I do a masters. I only chose here because of my GCSE grades. It was here (uni of Liverpool), UEA, Sussex, York or Surrey and chose here because I wanted to go to a city and Liverpool isn't too far from my hometown (2 hours drive away). Also all my friends from college came to Liverpool (but they went to John Moores so I never see them) and I kinda wanted to stay with them. Otherwise I'd have chosen Surrey.

But i couldn't even apply for the unis I wanted to apply for originally though, because my gcse grades were too low. And I think maybe, if I do a masters to go to a uni I originally wanted to go to, but couldn't go to for undergrad.

Yeah it is, low contract time and only lecture/occasional seminar time, then the only time to socialise is in the subject's society which all they do is go out drinking and clubbing. So unless you're into that, that society isn't for you. Plus everyone here's cliquey, people have their own groups and don't take well to outsiders.

Yeah it will pass, I will try my best, thank you

If you want plenty of stuff to do then stay in a city, there'll be fewer opportunities at a smaller uni in a smaller place. Liverpool is a perfect student city in my opinion so I'm quite surprised that you're not a fan.
I don't think going to a different uni will really change anything, I think you just need to maybe make more effort. The only help you really get is the flatmates you're provided with in first year, everything else is up to you.
Definitely join societies or go to course socials and just put yourself out there a bit more. Try to say yes to more things and get yourself out of your comfort zone. You're lucky you're still only in first year, you have plenty of time to change things.
