What exactly is wrong with Oxfam workers hiring prostitutes in Haiti

There is no indication that they failed to pay a living wage.

I think the issue is more the image Oxfam has and the stigma attached to sex workers.

They're people. With human needs. They're not Jesus.
Hmm... that's a tough one, let me think.

Allegations of underage girls (14-16) involved.

Illegality: Prostitution is illegal in Haiti

Exploitation: Exploiting the extremely dire circumstances of people from a poverty-stricken country forced into prostitution by a natural disaster destroying their homes and livelihoods is in very poor taste.

Hypocrisy: Oxfam was a supporter of the UN inter-agency standing committee on protection from sexual abuse, which prohibits aid workers buying sex. The charity had its own policy declaring it would “not tolerate sexually abusive or exploitative acts being perpetrated by our employees”.

Cover up: Oxfam confirmed none of the allegations was referred to police or authorities in Haiti. At the end of their internal inquiry, September 2011, Oxfam issued a press statement reporting that a small number of staff had been “involved in a number of instances of misconduct”. No mention was made of the exploitative sexual misconduct that the whistleblower had reported and the investigation report had upheld.

Yup, can't see anything wrong with that!

Yes and when you're part of an organisation trying to stop poverty/abuse globally, given the nature of most sex workers, it's likely that they're the people you're meant to be helping, not taking advantage of their desperation.

That is irrelevant. Oxfam is funded by the the tax payer via the idiocy that is foreign aid. I don’t want my taxes going towards hookers.

Age is just a number. Puberty is not. And exploitation is not exploitation if the other person wanted to be exploited. Then who's exploiting who?

That is irrelevant. Any hint that aid is dependent on corruption, sexual favours or bribery is a big no-no, as is the possibility of well-paid foreign aid workers taking advantage of the straits the locals find themselves in.

In addition, there is the implicit implication that they were using Oxfam funds to pay for their 'extra curricular activities'. Like it or not, politicians, health care workers, teachers, boy scout leaders, ministers, are supposed to set an example for the rest of us - mainly the younger 'impressional' set. These twerps are hardly doing that.

Not to mention promotion of human trafficking, exposed risk to disease without health care access, risk of violence and lack of choice through little/no access to education (oh the irony of this thread on tsr!)...

Which makes zero sense. Underage is underage. Prostitution is illegal in Haiti, the aid workers were wrong.

prostitution/sex is a "need"? @nonotyoutoo
It is an abuse of power, and clearly not to be condoned, indeed should be totally stamped out if possible, but the hysterical overreaction, the complete moral panic is laughable, all the same.

It is the perfect storm, of course. All the virtue signalling liberals can pile on in, because it has everything, #metoo, feminist outrage, first world/third world tyranny, white on black racism, the whole lefty caboodle.

And all the right wingers who think the entire global charity industry is a racket, with the billions and billions in aid distributed by naive and or incompetent NGO's, with most of the money going to corrupt in country warlords, they get to pile on in as well.

It must have been a really slow news day to have reached this level of media meltdown and mass hysteria. There are plenty of under age girls being exploited by fully grown men in this country. You don't need to go to Haiti, just Rotherham of Rochdale. No-one seems too concerned by that. Certainly not enough to stop it...

Exactly. Is the OP suggesting they can’t go 2 weeks without a shag. If they are that horny knock one out into a flannel. That’s free.

Yes. I am suggesting that they can't go 2 weeks without a shag. I am making the point of that they presumably paid the girls and both parties were happy. If anything, a influx of foreign currency to purchase a local services counts as an export of goods which will have raised the GDP and be subject to positive multiplier effects in the local economy. Much more useful than snowflake high hosery no?
Prostitution occurs because of poverty and corruption. Oxfam's role is to stop this and aid those unfortunate enough to participant in such acts to feed their families.
What kind of human are you to not see anything wrong with using people who are desperate?!
