Brighton Film School?

Hi all, really hope someone could be of help here.

So, I’ve bummed all my other options and got rejections from all choices and was considering Brighton Film School. I was really hoping to get an actual uni experience but clearly can’t, would anyone be able to give me any advice on what it’s like?

Because Brighton uni do the top up degree would they be in link with Brighton’s student union and such? (I.e for freshers and that) or is it all just independent and nothing like that?

Thanks if you could help.

Not sure about what you mean about linking with the SU? As a Brighton student you will belong to it yes. If the course is interesting to you then go for it but don't just go to uni for the sake of it. Work out why you got rejected and see if you can improve your application. You can find students here.

Hello,

The filmmaking course is broken up into a HND (equivalent of first two years of university) and then the third year as a top-up to make it become a full BA honours (third year of university). The HND course is in partnership with University Centre Hastings and the third year is in partnership with Brighton University. You will have access to their student union, library resources, student support and computer forums. Basically, we follow our partner institutions policies and procedures, but all the teaching and assessment is run through Brighton Film School.

You can still have the ‘uni experience’ if you would like. We partner with a hall of residence (Abacus House first come first serve basis), otherwise our filmmaking students privately rent together. You can join sports teams or societies linked with our partner institution including fresher’s weeks.

Our entry requirements for the Filmmaking HND course is two A Levels C and above, or a BTEC Merit. If you would like to talk to one of our current students about their experience on the course or a graduate, please direct message us and we would be happy to provide you with an email address for them and telephone number?

In the meantime, if you have any questions about the course, equipment and facilities or Brighton itself, please don’t hesitate to ask 😊

Hi, thank you so much!! Your answer is actually amazingly helpful, in regards to the societies and such, does that mean the freshers week would initially mean it’s partnered with Uni of Brighton’s so like their freshers fair and such for societies?

Thank you again, I just want the whole experience both socially and educational and was confused due to not much information online :-)
Not a problem 😊

In your first two years, you will be partnered with University Centre Hastings and their SU, societies and fresher’s week. In your third year, if you choose to do the top-up to turn your HND into a BA honours, you will then have the above but through Uni of Brighton.

Totally understand you want to university experience and we make sure at Brighton Film School our students still have these opportunities. We are also located right in the centre of Brighton, a 5 minutes’ walk from The Lanes, which are filled with great restaurants, shops and bars/pubs.

We have an open evening on Thursday 15th March if you would like to come and visit us? It’s a great chance to see Brighton as well as BFS. Our filmmaking students will be there, and we run a lighting and camera demo on our film set. If you’re interested, you can book onto this here: https://brightonfilmschool.co.uk/open-days/

My son is thinking to go to Brighton Film School... I was actually skeptical about the setting (Partner with University etc) so I thought Brighton Film School may be less academic... and glad to find this thread... I saw on your website saying the Long course is "2days" is that really only you take 2days of week? or am I reading it wrong?
Hi Kaorin,

The course is a full-time undergraduate degree. The teaching hours are two full days per week, with an expectation of students doing independent hours outside of this. We structure the course this way for several reasons. Quite a few universities will spread out their teaching hours throughout the week e.g. 3 hours on a Monday, 2 on a Tuesday, none on a Wednesday and 4 on a Thursday. We feel this isn’t practical with a Filmmaking course, so the structure of the course is two full days side-by-side (e.g. Monday and Tuesday) from 9:30am until 4:30pm. This means the students can use the set, editing suites, screening rooms etc. for a full working day. We do run extra workshops and have guest lectures come in outside of students core hours too if they choose to attend these.

I hope this has answered your question. Please let me know if you would like to know anything more

Hey- I’m not part of bfs but I’m going there from September too! But if you’re looking for tips I know there’s some other people on the Facebook group looking for housemates (not sure if they still are? It’s been a couple weeks) but if not- websites such as sturents and rightmove students offer you loads of options to house share with students! (Not sure how far you’re traveling/ if you’ve been to the area in Brighton much but due to where bfs is I’d recommend the furtherest being coldean/moulsecoombe area because of bus travel and such!

(Hope I could be somewhat helpful!)

Thanks! My son is unfortunately still looking for an accommodation... I think it's very hard for 1st year students to find any houses to share. I am very disappointed that Brighton Film School offer no help at all.

But thanks for your help.

Hi Kaorin,

We support our students in finding a accommodation with a third party specialist. I believe your son is on this list and has been found a property. We send numerous emails to applicants with details of what they need to do and who they need to contact as well as putting them into groups so they can find a house together withe specialist we provide.

Thanks, Brighton Film School
Hi, My son is starting in Sept and has found accommodation through Linda at Grosvenor Lettings, she has been really helpful. Not cheap but needs must. They let on a room by room basis which helps because none of them know each other yet to form groups. My only concern now is that he will be in the house on his own before any of the Uni lot arrive occupying the other rooms. He’s only been to Brighton once and that was interview day 😬
so does this mean, partnering with university of hastings and brighton uni, the film school students will have freshers parties with these students at those univeristies and have opportunity to join the freshers fayre/societies of these uni too, or is it just acces to the S.U. building?
Hey! Brighton Film School's 3-year degree is validated by the University of Brighton from September 2019 entry and onwards, not University Centre Hastings anymore. This means that the BA Hons Film Production students will have access to everything the university offers such as university-managed accommodation, the Student Union, sports/societies, library resources, student support services and other amenities.
okay, thank you, that's very useful, does the Brighton films students join in with UniofBrigtn's freshers week or does Brighton films school have separate events / no events at all. I know my daughter wants the full uni experience and doesn't know if there is going to be as much social life here, especially soemwhere as great and vibrant as brighton - would be a shame not to experience it. E.g. if her housemates dont go out, she will have to not go out either. (She isnt a party animal at all she just wants to socialise and make alot of friends at the beginning).
What about freshers fayre, they are allowed to go to uniofbrightn's freshers fayre too, i assume that is part of the SU.

Brighton Film School students join in the freshers week with the University of Brighton. Their student experience isn't hindered in anyway as they will get the practical industry-led offering from Brighton Film School and the university experience from the University of Brighton, such as freshers week, halls of residence, Student Union, sports/societies etc. if the students choose to use it.
