Lol guns are banned here, and my 15 year old friend has one
In America there are more guns than people, all you would be doing would be putting the lives of innocent people in danger as everyone else will still have one.

if your friend has an illegal weapon you should tell the police.

No. But you can ban people from buying them. The UK and US aren't exactly dramatically different in terms of society are we? I really don't understand why you need guns? The death rate is dramatically higher in the US than the UK.. Wonder why that is??

OK so you ban people from buying any more guns or ammo, that doesn't address the issue with everything that is already out there.

Gun amnesty? Who's really going to cough up $1000s worth of guns/ammo because they're given the chance to.

UK and US society is incredibly different. The UK is a far more socialist nation than the US.

Death rates in UK and US in general are pretty similar for most things, bar gun crime obviously. That's just due to availability. It's fairly well known fact that a gun is more likely to kill its owner than someone else.

Realistically you can't, there will be people that beat the system. I'm not naive enough to think that. But you can prevent millions from buying guns that genuinely don't really need one.. The only reason for a gun is security, yet America seem to be the only country to have school shootings on near enough, a daily occurrence.

There's a lot of people in the US who go hunting. Gun ownership isn't just self defence, it's quite a big hobby, range shooting, etc.

Oh ****, damn you got me bro I'm off to the police station right now...
For guns to be successfully banned in the USA,

1. An overwhelming majority of the populace need to support it
2. There needs to be a competant agency that would be able to sieze all of these guns
3. The borders should be well gaurded to prevent more guns from getting into the country.

Banning them and seizing all of the 300 million firearms in America will be incrediby difficult, if not impossible.

Fair enough, but you don't need an AK-47 to go hunting deer's, do you?
If people had participated in hunting as a sport and required a gun to do so, they should be given a gun licence which requires proof that you participate in the sport. There's no need for every single person in the US to have a gun.

Maybe, but it was estimated that over 346 people in the US were killed in mass shootings last year, this will continue to increase in the present day if the gun law does not put limitations and/or a ban on firearms for ordinary citizens of the USA!

That is a valid point. But wouldn't it make a positive impact if America stopped supplying them for citizens to buy? Obviously people will beat the system and transport them into America illegally, because that is the same with Class-A drugs being transported illegally within the British borders. But surely, if the UK had made Class-A drugs legal and begin supplying them within local drug stores - the death rate is obviously going to increase, due to more individuals being able to buy them because they're legal. Surely, that would be the same with guns? If USA ban them, the amount of firearms being purchased will decrease, due to them being illegal with consequences if caught having them in possession?

You wouldn't use an AK-47 to hunt deer, you'd want a single shot scoped rifle.
Well you see, that's exactly how it works. Most states require you to have a licence that states the intended purpose of the firearm. Assault rifles in general aren't sold as defence weapons, that's not their intended purpose.
It will take generations for Americans to change their relationship with firearms, even if they wanted to.

I agree, the US has the most gun deaths per head out side of any nation that's in a conflict, but the fact is, it's part of their culture.

You keep refusing to address how you would implement the gun bans. Do you stop people buying or confiscate weapons?

So killing innocent people (including children) is apart of your culture? I would stop people from buying firearms that have no necessary reason to have them.

I agree, it's not going to change overnight. But there must be a starting point and I believe that preventing people from buying guns that have no intended purpose to have one, should be stopped.

How do you suggest they start off then?

There's an almost romantic view of firearms in the US, if you ban them people will argue that only the "bad guys" will have access and won't be willing to give them up. They feel it's their constitutional right to own firearms, that's something buried deep in their identity.

It was a lot easier to control the sale of firearms here in the U.K., there was nowhere near as many in circulation.
Definitely. another shooting in a school this week. how many until people start to realise how unnecessary it is to allow guns for 'defence'?? how many lives does it save vs. how many deaths.
I understand that people want to feel safe but if they were illegal they would be safer anyway...

I've never once suggested killing people was necessary.

So you've said you'd stop people with no reason from buying them, address the 300m guns in circulation please, stop ignoring the question.

What is a necessary reason for owning a gun? Sport? Defence? Because it's a constitutionally protected right?

I thought you said the murder of millions of individuals was in the USA's culture? lol. I have answered your question, if you were reading my answers properly. The reason is what this whole debate is about, the reason why guns should be banned and to stop people from buying them is to PREVENT MILLIONS of innocent civilians within the USA to be killed by firearms. There really is no necessary reason to own a gun other than sport and for authorities use. Guns are not needed for protection, the UK make do without them, why shouldn't America? We're in the 21st century, why are you still holding on to what America's culture was like within the 1800's?
Could they have a ban on all new guns but allow current guns in circulation to stay (similar to like the ivory trade did). This means current guns owners can keep them and second hand sales can be done through official channels per say. At least the amount of legal gun ownership won't go up.
