Medicine -> Comp sci?

Hello,

I am very nervous about making this post and hope I can gather as much support and useful answers as possible

I have been in exhaustive indecision over the past 2 years passively over what I want to pursue and being Asian I was pushed towards doing medicine by my mum. However my dad being a surgeon knew the reality off the profession and was open about it.

Not to float my own boat but I am a high achieving student and in the middle of AS{year 12}.I have decided that my heart is simply not in medicine and though about what I loved and it came down to space and computing.

I realised what I loved and was truly good at{comp science at GCSE} was computer science and my ambition and one long-term desire hands always been to work at apple as I love the company inside out.

It suddenly struck me that I had found something I was passionate about and good at-my calling?{And a company I loved to go with its:}And my dad was supportive...

I may sound superficial but I honestly think I have what it takes.

However since before now I planned my life towards medicine my A-level currently are maths, chemistry and biology.

Dueto my nature I was hoping to go to a top university such as Oxbridge or imperial to do computer science.

Are my A-level suitable and note that I have GCSE computing,7A* at GCSE and do tons of coding as a hobby.

Also assuming this works will I have a realistic chance of becoming an engineer at apple and potentially climbing the ranks{or is that restricted to MBA people}..

ALL INSIGHTS AND ANSWERS WOULD BE SOOOOO HELPFUL.

Thanks.
Being in Yr12 you still have time to decide.

You definitely seem to be motivated to have a career in computing and have researched this well and you have your family supporting you in your decisions.

See if you are able to take an AS in computing next year alongside your A2s to give you something a bit more up to date when applying to university.

Why are you still undecided about medicine vs computing? Your whole post was about computing and you spoke enthusiastically about it - is there another side you haven’t said or another reason you’re still considering Medicine?

This year I’ve applied to Medicine (and got offers!) and I know it’ll be a long and hard journey to be OMG a doctor but I’m motivated to go through with that which is what is needed as otherwise people tend to either drop out of med school or at the end of the degree pursue another career.

If you’re still undecided I would recommend having a full conversation with your parents, your tutor and a careers advisor (not necessarily all at once!) so you can plan and make confident decisions.

Best of luck to you 😊

wow thanks for the amazing response.

I do honestly feel incredibly motivated to do comp science and AS computing sounds brilliant!

Thanks I feel like if I strive and use my talents I could potentially work at my dream-Apple.

Honestly there are no other sides when I think about computer science I get too excited and it{and space:} are what I think about even in the worst parts of my life like when I broke my knee and was stuck at home.

When I think about apple and the company and working to go there I feel a sense of contingency and happiness that I cannot explain but life invigorates me.Its truly amazing.

It seems to fulfil money, happiness, motivation and interests and all areas of my life.

Is aiming towards apple{I absolutely love this company}solely unhealthy as such?

Thanks.
It’s good to have goals as this provides motivation and determination!

It also good to be excited about a potential career as it’s important to love a career/job!

There’s no reason you can’t aspire to work with Apple as you have the enthusiasm and the intellect so I wouldn’t say it was an unhealthy goal

Having an aspiration to work at a specific company isn't nessecarily a bad thing, but you do have to ask yourself why a job at Apple? There are going to be many companies where you would be doing what is essentially the same job. And for that matter do you have a specific idea of what type of job within a tech company you'd want? Because I'm almost certain that will influence how much you enjoy work more than which company you are working for

Thanks for the reply!

I absolutely love apple. From their products to their values as a company.

To delve into this my attractions originates from the idea of their attention to detail to the core founding idea that the user experience must be at the heart of all projects and products. This I cannot agree with any more.

And I know this sounds superficial but I feel a sense of excitement and belonging if I think about a potential future where I work at apple and rise the ranks as apple believe engineers should be in too position not just MBA/etc.

Also in terms of position within computer engineer{or is it computing?} I was thinking hardware aspect of things since that peaks my curiosity.
Any more thoughts?

Why Comp Sci then rather than something more Electronics based if you think you want to go into the hardware side of things? (not saying I know the right answer, just trying to make sure that you've considered your options)
Well,I’m quite split as I’m very enthusiastic about apples endeavours and computer science as I do enjoy hardware but also enjoy seeing geyser and especially coding. So it’s more of specialisation.Would you say I need to know that now as many believe I’m already super well planned?
It might be a good idea to self teach further maths? Maybe up to AS during summer and then join the A2 class at school or something? Just so it makes your A levels more attractive to the 'top' unis.

From my experience I'd inclind to agree that at top unis Further Maths is definitely preferred, as the courses are generally very maths heavy and quite theoretical

Congrats best of luck to you. I did consider doing medicine, but with the state of the NHS and healthcare in this country and the insane amount of stress the staff are put under I decided I wouldn't be able to cope with that. So I went for Veterinary instead (which is still high pressure I know) and have offers for that.
So are my three a level Biology Chemistry and Mathematics suitable for computing at a top uni?
I have the potential to take up computing but that’s it.

Would the resultant 4be a strong set for day oxbridge or UCL etc or...?

Technically it should be fine as you meet the requirements, however you'd be a lot more competitive if you had further maths, and I'd personally take that up rather than Comp Sci

But what can I do I’m already halfway through AS.i just want to cry.
You can always take Further Maths in your second year. At my college I was able to drop Psychology after AS and pick up AS Physics as I gave a valid reason (it would help me apply for Medicine)
But at my sixth form surely I’ll have to study with the year below?

There will be many universities that if you get good grades in your current subjects will give you offers without a second thought. But due to the competitiveness of Oxbridge, ICL, UCL and such there is no way of guaranteeing an offer, from anecdotal evidence very strong maths is one of the biggest factors, so further maths is a good indicator of maths skill, but if that isn't possible, then looking into taking AEA, STEP or Maths Challenges may be good.

That said if you get invited to a Cambridge interview you get the CSAT to show off your maths skills, and Oxford you take MAT pre-interview so not having further maths may not stop you from getting offers if you can prove your ability in a different way.

Another thing to do may be to do an EPQ, as that is a good way to show your interest in computing outside of taking A Level Comp Sci.

If you want to stand the best chance of getting offers make sure you have done stuff to prove you are really keen to study the subject!
