This question is from the edexcel January 2014 paper...
While attempting this myself i ended up getting 5 environments but according to the mark scheme it should be six .. can anyone explain how there are 6 different environments and not 5.

Thanks

2,3-dimethylpentane

Identical environments have identical atomicities through all levels of bonding.

If you show the condensed formula:

(CH3)2CHCH(CH3)CH2CH3

it becomes clearer. The first environment is the six H atoms in the two methyl groups in the bracket. All other H enviroments are unique.

How is the (CH3)2CH environment different from that of the other CH(CH3) environment ?

It is in a different environment because it has different atomicity (the atoms that it is connected to in all directions as far as you can go).
