Dear UoM students: Which accommodation should I apply for?!

Hi there,

I recently received an offer to study medicine at Manchester, and I'm considering my accommodation options for September. I'd be very grateful if any Manchester students could advise me on some queries I have about the accommodation situation in Manchester.

I'm looking for self-catered, en-suite halls.

1. Fallowfield or City?
Having done some research, I think I'd personally prefer the Fallowfield lifestyle over the quieter areas in Victoria Park. However, I was wondering what the atmosphere in City accommodation is like. Is it quiet too, and do you have to travel to Fallowfield for socialising?

However, I think city accommodation could potentially be in a more convenient location, especially because I would be at uni Monday-Friday on my course. Any insight into the potential pros and cons would be really helpful

2. What's the deal with internet access?
I think nearly all the halls have wired internet, but many don't have wifi. Do students organise their own internet as a flat?

3. Thoughts on:
A) Richmond Park (Fallowfield)
B) Sheavyn House
C) Denmark Road

Thank you so much!

Hi - sorry you haven't had a response to this yet. I'm just going to bump the thread in the hope that someone sees this and can help :h:

Hi! Really sorry I'm very late to your thread, just came across it scrolling through Manchester threads. I've firmed Manchester to study Music in September but I applied to accommodation quite a while ago. I chose Richmond Park, Sheavyn House and Denmark Road in that order of preferences. I know quite a few people who have gone to Manchester and all recommended to stay in Fallowfield as it's the most social area. A friend told me that I'd regret not choosing Fallowfield even though it's quite far out. I put Denmark Road as my third choice as I wasn't a huge fan of any other Fallowfield halls other than Richmond and Sheavyn. Hope this helps and I might see you around in September!!
I just wanted to know where you ended up applying to? I think the questions you asked were really good and I’d like to have answers to them myself... if you don’t mind

Hi, not sure if it’s past the application date by now but I’m at Uni of Manchester and might be able to help if you’re still wondering about accommodation.
1) I live in Fallowfield and it has its pros and cons. It is a very social area, as you always see students out all through the night and it’s always busy with (apparently) lots of parties. It’s generally a nice area to live in with great takeaways and a massive Sainsburys for shopping. Although I haven’t made an friends in my hall (Owens Park) because none of my flatmates really speak to each other, so living in Fallowfield doesn’t necessarily guarantee a social life. It’s basically just pure luck depending on who your flatmates are, plus the halls there do get very noisy sometimes, including week days, so it can be difficult getting to sleep depending on where you live. City is far better location-wise, as its a few minutes away from main campus so easy to get to lectures (also probably no need to buy a bus pass, unlike in Fallowfield) and it does have it’s fair share of shops and takeaways. I’m living there next year so I don’t really know exactly what it’ll be like, but one thing I’ve heard is that there are lots of international students so there may be a language barrier, which could make socialising more difficult than in Fallowfield (not sure about this though).
2) As far as I know, all of the university-owned halls have a standard UoM wifi portal which all students have free access too, plus Eduroam but you have to set that up first.
3) Richmond Park is apparently very nice and friendly, as a friend from my course lives there and he said he likes it a lot. Very expensive though considering it’s not catered, so that may be something to consider. Don’t know much about Sheavyn, apart from its apparently quieter than the other Fallowfield halls (which may or may not be a good thing as some of them are noisy). Denmark Road is rated one of the best university halls in the country, and is apparently the best in Manchester. Also very convenient location, Although, when I went to the open day last August, the head of accommodation said it’s so popular among applicants that most people are very unlikely to get it, unless they get in early, so I guess it depends on whether you’re applying before most people.
Hope that helps

Thanks for answering! Better late than never lmao, but the original poster probably applied already...
I just wanted to ask, appx when do you know you’ve been accepted for accommodations? I’m a bit skeptical and like to know early whether I’m accepted or rejected, but it’s been about a month since I applied and still nothing...

Hello - firstly, let us apologise for not replying sooner to this. We've recently set up a student ambassador account so that we can reply to these things much more timely.

If anyone is still wondering about the halls mentioned, we pulled together some ambassador responses into a blog post here. It covers quite a few different accommodations. If you want to see another accommodation reviewed, just let us know and we can add it. If you want something specifically answering about student experiences of halls, just let us know!
