Dialysis is a process wherby an machine artificially removes urea from the blood and correctly balances mineral ions. This is the job that the kidneys would normally do, however if the Kidneys do not work, dialysis can be an effective measure to keep someone alive until a transplant donor kidnety can be found.

The dialysis machine is basically just a pump, and is hooked up to the person’s blood vessels. The tubes must be partially permeable, in order to allow substance exchange to occur. The dialysis fluid is measured to be the exact same levels as healthy blood, no urea and the correct levels of salt and mineral ions.

The urea will diffuse from the person’s blood and into the fluid, which is pumped away. If the salt levels in the blood are higher than in the fluid (the correct level), then they too diffuse from the blood to the fluid. If the salt levels in the blood are too low, then salt diffuses from the fluid to the blood.

The purpose of dialysis is to remove all urea from the blood, as well as balance the salt and water levels. In the long run, it is expensive to it is only usually done while the patient is waiting for a transplant. It is also very time consuming and painful.
