Yeaaah I PM about double the amount I post. Much prefer to PM OP if they are having a problem rather than reply. Shows more care and people usually open up more so you can help better 
It's useful to reply to the thread rather than simply PMing since it means if people have a similar problem and find that thread they can see the suggestions if they don't want to post for whatever reason.
Just another perspective
