Do I need to pick and apply for accommodation for my insurance as well as my firm or can I only apply to accommodation if I have firmed the uni

No, you can apply for accommodation for both your firm and insurance choice unis. I've applied for my firm choice ones, just waiting for the accommodation application to open for my insurance choice://

This varies from university to university. Check yours.
