The EU is a protectionist racket, they have weak and ineffectual trade deals and a huge common external tariff, add to that the double whammy from non tariff barriers such as high regulatory standards and an energy market that shoves energy costs far in excess of market rates and suddenly we start to see the impact of the EU's nanny statism and protectionism, free trade always, always, always makes you richer, and in the short term we may get poorer, in the long term we'll do better as we'll be able to address the fact that in an age of cheap transportation, we still sell more to five million Irish than 1.3 billion Chinese, we'll be outside of the EU's cowering tariff walls, and hopefully free of it's "anti-dumping" as well, and we'll be able to do a lot better as the purchasing power of our currency rises due to cheaper imports.
