how do you simplify x^1/2 = x^-1/2?

I cancelled the x values and then cross multiplied but it gave me 1=-1 and I'm supposed to get x=1

Since X^1/2 is X/2,

and X^-1/2 is the same as 1/2X

So X/2 = 1/2X

2X^2 = 2

X^2 = 2/2
X^2 = 1

Square root of one is 1,

Therefore X = 1.

You can’t cancel out because you have to simply it first, as in the first step I did.

Hope that helps.

What. Is. That?

The proper way:
x1/2 = x-1/2
x1/2 = (x1/2)-1
√x = 1/(√x)
(√x)2 = 1
x = 1

How did u get X = X?

My way is just a longer way so they can understand it, but the 2s cancel and x^2 = 1

It's not longer, it's wrong. Revise the exponent rules.
And x2 = 1 has two solutions anyway.
