Also curious to know what background is needed for admission as I am considering applying here. 1st class honours in statistics from an Irish uni, which included some research experience (final year project). Two year's work experience in a related field. My referees are quite strong, with good reputations, yet don't know me too well.

Hmm... I would take it as a good thing that you haven't heard back yet then.
I've applied to the stats MSc at UCL also. I should have heard back last week from them but received an email last night explaining that they would not be making a decision until April.
