Gravity is always directed down towards the centre of the Earth.

So if upwards is positive then acceleartion due to gravity is negative and if downwards is positive then gravity is positive.

It can be either depending on which direction you choose to be positive. In an M1 kinematics question you always start by deciding which direction is positive.

An example question would help.

You choose this yourself. You can choose either direction and you'll get the right answer assuming your working is valid.

E.g. if I choose downwards as positive then acceleration due to gravity is 9.8. If I choose upwards as positive then acceleration due to gravity is -9.8.
