Because hot is too vague and obvious to say. She has heard it many times. Try unique compliments such as I like your hair style it suits you or I like your watch etc.

Lots of people are 'bad' at taking a compliment. It is the British way.
Yeah...Girls don't like getting compliments from just anyone. I mean if you were handsome/good looking then maybe you can get away with it but from what you've said, doesn't look like you got the goods.
