They do. It depends what your status is and the purpose behind the compliment. If you're using a compliment to try and get something like make her like you or something, it's typically obvious you're being tryhard hence a bad reaction.

On Ecstasy you may give a lot of compliments but they will be taken very differently. I also find you don't compliment beauty on E. But compliment things like how she matched her dress color to her eye color, how well she dances, etc. Because you will be coming from a position of social superiority these comments are interpreted very differently to how they are when you're coming from a place of weakness trying to get something.
