Animation/Illustration or Architecture?
So here is my problem.. I am sure that I want to follow an animation career in the future but there is one thing that I worry about..
Should I go straight for Illustration/Animation BA and do an MA in Computer animation or sth ?
Or
Do an Architecure BA and an MA in computer animation?
Since the beginning I kept saying that studying illustration first and then go for animation would be ideal for me but after a discussion I had with my uncle, he kept talking about the future career and the limited opportunities I will have etc.. so I thought that if I study architecture first and then animation I will have more choices, as I will be both an architect and animator..
what do you guys think? Will I have enough opportunities and a good job career if I go straight for animation?

I'm the same as you and have always wanted to go into animation, I'm doing an undergrad degree in Digital Media though and then a postgrad 1 year course in animation I think it's putting all your eggs in one basket if you do 4 years animation, you might not even enjoy it! whereas in your case if you did architecture then animation, you could be really innovative and design 3D computer models of houses etc

Yes you might be right about the 4 years animation.. but I was also thinking doing Illustration for undergraduate degree which might be more creative as you draw more etc and after that 1 year postgraduate in animation.. I'm really confused right now

I'm really confused right now I guess it's up to whether you feel confident that you will definitely enjoy illustration and can make a career out of art! I decided to do a general degree and then do the postgraduate degree to specify in the niche area I'm interested in :P architecture is a very hard degree from what I've heard, people only seem to only enjoy it if they have a true passion for the subject!!
Alright. So I was in the same situation about 6 years back, and I opted to study Architecture. Where I live, it's a 5 year long gruesome-as-hell course, and it's pretty tough. I am currently looking for MA Illustration courses and I want to run as far away as possible from architecture. While I certainly learnt a LOT from doing the Architecture course, I wish I had just studied illustration/anything art related because 5 years is a LOT of time to invest in something that I wouldn't particularly be pursuing later on in life. I could have used those 5 years to become a better artist or something or even had my masters in my hands by now. I cannot argue with what your uncle had to say, but.. yeah just think this stuff through before taking a call.

Well that was 2 years ago (woah :O ) I'm actually doing animation now and I think it was the right thing to do haha!

Hi there,
I had a similar experience when applying to university. I have always been creative and wanted to pursue a career in art, in my head I had it that I would do a degree in Fine art and then specialise more each year as I found out the areas I liked. And then maybe eventually do a master in Interior Design and the do that as a career.
A month into the Fine Art course I wasn't getting what I wanted out of it or being challenged so I switched onto Interior and now I am in my second year, loving it and having secured a placement too. I would say be bold and stick with your gut and do what you want to do. But it may also be the case that you don't really realise what you want to do until you do something and realise it is something you don’t want to do.
In terms of choosing architecture for a degree, it is a very long and difficult degree, I would only advise you do it if you are really passionate about it. It is a very different course to illustration and animation so itis interesting that you are considering it. What is it about Architecture that interests you?
You will still learn a wide range of skills on an animation or illustration course that will be transferrable across many creative disciplines. At A-level I tried to keep my career options open by studying fine art, chemistry and Spanish. That was a mistake as I wasn't passionate about chemistry and it became a massive pain, I wish I had have specialised earlier and gained some more relative skills to my interests.

Hey, I'm in a similar situation to you now, my parents are pretty concerned about me wanting to do animation and are worried about the job options after uni (so am i). they think that i should do a graphic design course first but those courses just don't excite me and tbh i don't think i would be very good at it! >.<
If you don't mind me asking - did you go straight into animation or did you take a foundation course and how are you finding the course so far? Are you still worried about the limited career opportunities?

If you are worried about career opportunities I suggest going to the universities and talking to their students. It would also be a good idea to talk to recent graduates to talk about their journey. I'm sure if you reach out to someone they would be more than happy to offer you advice. Coming to an open day will give you the opportunity to look at students work while also being able to get their opinions and advice about the course.
You should check out Ravensbourne as well. Our Animation course has a 85% employment rate after graduation and we have an overall 94% employment rate. Our students get to work on industry briefs throughout their time while learning to work in a collaborative and industry standard way. The Animation course is also ranked one of the best in the world.
