Hi!
I understand that new accomodation has been built for students from Glasgow University such as IQ Elgin and St Mungoo's but information about this accomodation is not available on your website? Does that mean the buildings are not available yet? I am a bit confused, would these places be available as a choice if I applied for student accomodation to Glasgow University?

I have a place to start a master's in September. Do masters students usually have accomodation for the full 12 months or have the standard term that finishes in June?

Hi @JW1247,

Apologies for the delay in responding. Congratulations on getting your place at the Uni.

The length of your accommodation contract will probably just depend on the requirements of your course. A lot of our postgraduate students will have dissertations and exams to complete during the summer months so will need the full 52-week contract. On the other hand, students who may be researching and writing their dissertations and coursework away from campus may find that they will only require their accommodation for the 39 week period up to June.

Although, should you sign up for a 39-week contract and then discover as the term progresses that you need accommodation after June we usually offer students the option of extending their stay over the summer in February/March of the following year.

Hi @tyson69,

Most students who are staying at Queen Margaret tend to walk to campus as it only takes around 20/25 minutes. There are a number of buses that will take you along Great Western Road and down to the Byres Road area but with the Botanic Gardens just around the corner from the residence it’s usually nicer just to go on foot.

Hello, so i have received an offer from glasgow and whilst reading the terms i came across the £600 fees that has to be paid after accepting application. What would be the end date for paying the fees? As i get my results in May and would like to finalize payments right after the results...

Congratulations on receiving your offer :smile:

Yes, the £600 prepayment is made as part of the contract acceptance process and will be taken off your overall accommodation fees. The remainder of the fees will be added to your MyCampus account after you have checked in to your accommodation in September and at that point, you will be able to decide whether you would like to pay with a Direct Debit, in monthly instalments or in one lump sum. To avoid any confusion with the payments it is probably best to have your financial plan set up as early as possible so within a couple of weeks of moving in would be ideal.

Hi @niamh_ritchie,

Excellent choice! Queen Margaret and Kelvinhaugh Gate are very well placed for commuting both to the main University campus and to the Dental Hospital in the city centre. Kelvinhaugh Gate is the closer of the two being around 10/15 minutes walk away from both the Campus and the Dental Hospital. Queen Margaret is about 20/25 minutes’ walk away from the main University campus and about 40/45 minutes’ walk from the Dental Hospital but there are also good transport links on the nearby Great Western Road and the subway at Hillhead so you wouldn’t have any problems with getting to and from class.

Queen Margaret and Kelvinhaugh Gate also have a very good reputation for sociability. They are similar in size and layout and both are made up of five-person flats with shared kitchens so there are lots of opportunities to make friends and socialise. The Living Support teams at both sites also work hard to ensure that there are lots of social events going on throughout the year. If you have a look at both Queen Margaret and Kelvinhaugh Residences Facebook pages you should get a better idea of the kind of events that are on offer.

Hi @Hundeschule,

Yes, depending on dates and availability we will hopefully be able to organise a tour of the residences for you. We will unfortunately not be able to offer any viewings after 13 April as the University exam period will be commencing and we cannot disrupt our current residents but if you will be in Glasgow before that we should be able to get something arranged.

I have a question regarding the Student Appartments in Hillhead and Gibson Street. Price and location wise they seem to be a very good deal. Are they in high demand? Why are they comparatively cheaper than Kelvinhough Gate and Queen Margret Residences?

Hi @Pedaw1

Yes, we allocate rooms on a first come first served basis so the earlier you apply the more likely you are to get one of your top choices.

The applications for 2018/19 should be opening at 10am today (Thursday 5 April) so if you log on to onlineapps.accom.gla.ac.uk you will hopefully be able to create your account and select your choices.

Yes, Student Apartments is always a very popular choice amongst our students but the difference in price is only due to the fact that Queen Margaret and Kelvinhaugh Gate have ensuite rooms whilst both twin and single rooms in Student Apartments are standard with shared bathroom facilities.

Hi @emil1234,

Well done, that’s an exciting choice to have! Unfortunately, at this stage, we have to give priority to students who live outwith reasonable commuting distance to the Campus so it is unlikely that we could offer you accommodation at the moment. This can change once everyone who cannot commute has been allocated so, come September, we would hopefully be able to start looking at options for more local students. Equally, if there are any extenuating circumstances that may affect your ability to travel please get in touch with us and we can look into that for you.
