Psychological theories that explain how/why people are influenced by the media

Dissertation help. I was thinking of elaboration likelihood model, but there isn't much research on how it works with media.
And also, can anyone think of theories that explain how/why people resist persuasion from such influence? I was thinking reactance theory, but again, there isn't really any research on how it works with media.
