DURHAM or ST ANDREWS???!!!???
Not sure which one I should firm?
Here's some of the pros & cons I'm thinking of:
Durham:
Pros:
1. In a lively town, have good shops, nice restaurants
2. A reasonably big uni - can meet lots of friends
3. Only requirements: A*AA
4. College I've chosen is really pretty.
5. Catered accommodation
Cons:
1. NO ENSUITES!!!
2. Have to share with a room mate for 1 term in first year!!!! (AGHHHHH)
3. 4 hours by train
St Andrews:
1. YOU CAN SKIIII!!! It's only 1.5hrs from the slopes & they have a snow sports society & a slalom race team!!!
2. They have a scuba diving society, horse riding and Polo!!!
3. They're higher in the league tables than Durham
4. Only need AAA
5. Beautiful countryside
Cons:
1. The town is quite small - I'm visiting soon so will hopefully find out
2. They're over 1.5 hours from the nearest concert hall ... which means I won't be able to go to many gigs
3. You don't get to choose accommodation ... that means I might not get catered and I might not get an ensuite

I am in the exact same situation! What subject have you applied for? ... Because another thing I am unsure about with my subject (English Lit) is the 4 years at St Andrews instead of 3 years at Durham!
I've applied for Economics ... same for me, but it's only 4 years because it's a masters (instead of a Bachelor's) x

A list of pros and cons is not a good way to decide which university to apply to. You have to visit them to see if you like place/uni, and you have to look at the course to see if you like what you’ll be studying. You mention that concert halls are 1.5 hours away or something, but there’s so much uni run music going on in St. Andrew’s which is really excellent, so I’m not quite sure what you’re talking about. Also, someone was talking about an extra year being a bad thing, but that’s how you get the integrated masters.

I've been to see Durham and I really liked it, and I've booked to go and see St Andrews soon ... but I'm not really sure what makes a "good uni". i've looked at the courses, they're very similar.
For the music, I'm talking about places like Brixton Electric, where they have well-known bands and stuff, not uni bands ... I know it seems silly but it's quite important to me.
What kind of things did you look at when you were choosing a uni? Also, which uni did you choose?

Also it will surprise you how many shops there are in St Andrews, we have countless chain stores and independent shops. I can't put numbers on it but it's like 2 full high streets plus two half-high streets worth of shops.
tbh, you will be so busy at st andrews taking part in society events, partying, socialising and studying that you won't need to go to gigs that often until half-term. Plus Dundee is very lively and only a 25 min bus ride away.
i personally wouldn't recommend ensuite anyway as it makes for a poorly social atmosphere, unless you're in flat-style halls - DRA/Fife Park

Do boys share with girls?they're just shower rooms like what you get in the swimming pool, there are no sanitary issues. in mixed halls corridors will have parts with girls rooms and parts with guys rooms, and you only use the showers nearest your room.
the only thing is the walk from the showers to your bedroom door in a towel, but there's 1 shower room for 5 bedrooms so we're talking a 10 metre walk to your room from the showers at the very most.

Currently a first year at Durham (Hatfield) so feel free to ask me anything specific. I was in your shoes last year as well (although I also added in Edinburgh to the mix). Ultimately chose Durham due to collegiate system, livelier town, and course.

I do Combined Honours in History in Politics (though switching to geo and politics). I also play uni volleyball and am involved with college stuff. I'm an intl student so my home is a ways away

I've been allocated to Hatfield (offer is for Psychology), and I'm kinda nervous about some of the comments people make; it's rah, snobbish, has a big 'rugby lad' culture, which I guess mean really loud jocks trying to dominate everything....
Is this over-stated by people or is there any truth to it in your experience?

It's definitely not as outlandish in Hatfield as people make it out be. I would say it's a Durham-wide stereotype (with some truths to it but not universal). The 'rah' culture in Hatfield is about the same in every other college. There are TONS of people in Hatfield who I've met that are grounded and down to Earth, and some who are a bit along the stereotypes. The more involved you get with the college, the more opportunities there are to meet people and the more you see it's not as 'rah' as people make it out to be.

Hi, I'm in the exact same position as you a year ago (psychology in hatfield) and was wondering if you could help... I heard other people don't like to socialise with the Hatfield students because it is known as the 'posh house' - is that true? Also I was looking at the student feedback for the psycholgy course and the student satisfaction for Durham teachers is quite low; what do you think about the teaching?
