Neurology Medical Elective in London

Hi!

I'm an international student and I'm planning on doing a neuro elective in London. I would like to ask what schools/hospitals in london have a strong neuro program? I wanted to do an elective in the national hospital for neurology and neurosurgery but unfortunately, they don't have elective placements for july and august, which is the time I'll be doing my elective.

If it helps, my primary interests in neurology are cerebrovascular diseases and cognitive neurology (dementia, alzheimer's, etc.)

I chose London out of all the possible cities in the UK because I have family that lives there, so accommodation wouldn't be a problem anymore.

UCL’s Institute of Neurology at Queen Square is one of the best in London!! I’d highly recommend this.

The other major centres for neurology in London are (medical school in brackets)

Charing Cross Hospital (imperial)
St George's Hospital (St George's)
The Royal London (Bart's)
King's College Hospital (King's)

The royal Free also has a big neurology department but I'm not sure if they have an inpatient ward or not

All of these are stroke centres too although I'm not sure which ones have large thrombectomy numbers (Georges and Charing cross do). Be mindful though that inpatient Neurology and Stroke are different specialities in the UK as most neurologists don't do any stroke work. So if you have an interest in stroke it's best to make that clear when you apply and you could potentially split your elective between Neuro/Stroke or have a supervisor that is a Neurologist with an interest in Stroke medicine. .

All of these centres probably have specialists in all areas of neurology. Charing Cross and Imperial has a good cognitive department including a lot of work on traumatic brain injury.. St Georges has a big cognitive and dementia set up. Kings has the institute of psychiatry on site too.

I really want to do my elective here!! Unfortunately, they don't have placements for July and August. I hope they miraculously open placements on those months soon!
