Probably Hawaii, love tropical climates.
Hawaii is awesome, plus Honolulu, the regional capital, actually has around 400k inhabitants and is a proper city with infrastructure. One could have a career in Hawaii and also enjoy all of the tropical climate, which is not the case in places like French Polynesia.
Hawaii also ranks 17th in per capita income among US states:

Hawaii has a university best suited to my specialisms so maybe there. I confess to knowing next to naught about specific US states.

I think it has the biggest number of hunters in the US. There's a lot of living space.Interestingly, the state has only less than 600k residents but in median household income and per capita income it ranks 18th, just behind the aforementioned Hawaii.

Interesting question. Kinda tough. Think I would pick the northern half (towards Canada) something like Vermont or Washington state (Washington DC would be another choice).
Never been but Colorado looks nice, Hawaii and Florida look great too, right along the beach.
California looks too busy for my liking.

I simply couldn't live in the US. I don't even really have that much interest in visiting! I'd perhaps like to see Yellowstone National Park.

Being honest, I wouldn’t want to be very close to Mexico (I know Texas is huge). Plus I believe the Northern half May be richer.

Yes Colorado has awesome landscape, it's actually quite a high income state (ranked 11 in per capita income). I especially like many relaxed laws in Colorado. Florida law is far too strict in my opinion. Also the people in Colorado seem to be social and there's a real sense of community.
