Hi - sorry you haven't had a response to this yet. I'm just going to bump the thread in the hope that someone sees this and can help :h:

I think I remember hearing about this, and I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the Queen visiting Exeter, and making a guild.

I've found a link on the Student Guild facebook page which may be of interest.

Basically, along with the royal charter saying the forerunner to the University had achieved University status, it also said there'd be a guild of students for students. This is very similar to a students Union though.

And, for the record, a few other UK Universities have student guilds too. Aberwystwth, Birmingham, Glyndŵr, Liverpool and maybe a few others have Student Guilds instead of unions or Associations.

ahhhh i see thank you
I've been studying at the University of Exeter since September 2016, and I didn't even know about the Queen's visit... I just thought the uni wanted to be extra by calling it a 'Guild'.
Same reason as the main building is called the "Forum", and the main performance/exam hall is called the "Great Hall", and the quiet study area is called "the Sanctuary" - pretension.

It's fairly harmless though, just a bit of nonsense. The Ram is still a decent post-exam/project meal (although not the cheapest) which is the important thing! I don't recall how cheap the alcohol was there though...so probably quite:tongue:

Maybe it's a link to Guild Socialism that was influential around the times these Guilds were formed.

The Ram is absolutely dire and the fact you'd go there, rather than pop down the hill to the Impy, shows how poor your judgement is.

Also don't know why it's called the Guild, nor do I care.

if you dont care buddy then why reply on this thread.
logic

I think as I primarily responded by addressing another poster's point, your supposedly engaging question about the Student Guild was not what attracted me to this thread.

Thank you for asking, mind.

Btw, people characterising "Guild" as odd don't understand how guild has historically been used nor have they deigned to look at the composition of other universities. Maybe you need to have more friends and you'd not be so blind?

https://www.liverpoolguild.org/ That notoriously pretentious Liverpool.

https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/undergraduate/birmingham/guild.aspx And Birmingham.

https://www.su.nottingham.ac.uk/sb/guild/ And Nottingham!

https://www.cardiffstudents.com/activities/societies/membership/ And Cardiff ...

https://www.essexstudent.com/societies/ And the elite of the elite, Essex!

http://studentsunionucl.org/clubs-societies/guild And a society at UCL's SU!

Mr N LLM LLB is done teaching the poor naive children for the day and it's only 00:17!

Well, i can guarantee you the SU in Nottingham... doesnt have the emblem of the guild @uni park lol

It definitely says Students Union on ALL letterhead and logos.

But fair enough...

It is stilll a bit out of date for a building in 2018...

Well, the fact they use Guild in a technical sense just shows it is not there for show but simply because it is an appropriate technical term to refer to an organisation which has responsibility for organising societies and student services. It is not some big conspiracy!

I don't really care what you do, including burning the SU building down and/or taking a **** in the corner of the meeting room.

I thought that if I sent it in response to OP, they'd accuse me of caring and I would lose the ****ing plot.
