Hi, I am currently studying A level English language.

Does anyone have any idea the potential question that could come up this summer?

Study past papers, but tbh dont over question guess as you could run into real problems. You should have the flexibility to always be able to answer sufficient questions on a paper.
Im also doing the english language a level AQA, does anyone have any good revision tips??

Hey, im thinking something The Paper 2 Section B could either be on Accent and Dialect or Language Change, and from what i've seen there seems to be a trend in the theme of sport appearing in Paper 1

I personally find cue cards and teaching my friends helpful, also just sit down a do a question here and there, doesn't have to be structured as such, as long as you get the practice in.
me and my friend also revise for our Paper 2 question 3 by picking a quote surrounding language and then analysing it to the moon and back lol, we just each make a point then pass the paper and the next person makes a point, passes it back until there is no more points to make. you can also instil a timer to create a sense of pressure and make it more enjoyable. I think that -if possible-n teamwork is the best way to revise this topic :smile:

I am doing A-Level English Langauge (AQA). Paper One is fine but I am struggling with paper two, does anyone have any practise questions? Or even better can anyone help me out with how to structure my responses, specifically to q3?

Haha okay makes more sense now, I was like, who's clintworth?? Question three was my biggest issue too but I've near enough got it down now.
I always identify three of four language discourses or themes within them and then put a01 into it for example we did the texts attached below so I picked the discourses

Idea of decay in language
Prescriptivist attitudes
Idea of a mistake in text a
Idea of illness or disgust in text b
I then picked the quotes that display these views and analyse them to death lol.

So for example the idea of disgust in text b is the metaphor -linguistic slimebal- which portrays the text producers disgust at the issue.

This means you get your language discourses and analysis in there but you don't get any marks for ao2 so don't force theories in, but if they fit then could add to your agrument.

Sorry for the long explanation but please feel free to ask if any of it doesn't make sense and hope it helps!

Hey lemoncow and kivs I usually put like two or three within each paragraph and do roughly four paragraphs, as long as you explain them and link them to the question you could easily get away with one per paragraph :smile:

Hey, happy to try and help :smile: for this question I personally do a short intro outlining the question, two paragraphs that go for the statement and two that are against before summarising my point in the conclusion. I normally make my theories my main point of the paragraph so that way I have a good basis for ao2 for example,

Evaluate the view that social groups use language to diverge from others:
Yes- teens use slang and MLE to diverge similar to Martha's vineyard study
No-one woman use language to converge and accommodate for others like tannens difference model
Both- occupation uses both specialist terms to diverge and swales discourse communities to converge

Summary, it depends on the situation and individuals in question but it can be used to diverge and converge

I used that plan on a recent essay and got an A just to reassure you that it's not rubbish lol x

You're welcome, i'm happy to help as teaching or helping others is actually my beast for of revision so any other questions please ask!

i would say at least 3 or four theorists or the whole question, just make sure you have some to back up each of your points and paragraphs and you should be okay :smile: Personally, i think the paper 1 will be based upon sports texts as this has been the case for like 80% of past papers and just in the past AS paper. for paper 2 i think section b could be on either teen speak or accent and dialect. this obviously isn't certain tho lol so be prepared for anything!

ah, you may have find my weak point lol, i hate CLA :wink: but still, i suppose i could do with the revision!

So, similarly to the writing option where you debate between accuracy and creativity, all you have to do is basically debate what is the biggest infleucence on the child's language within the text. to do this (and make sure you always link to the data!) i chose three or four key quotes within the data and link them to a theorist and explaining how this theory or factor is influencing them or the caregiver also included.

For example if the data was a parent reading a book with the child and the question was
"how far does interaction influence a child's development of spoken language?"
you could do paragraphs on
-child directed speech and scaffolding- Jerome Bruner
-the influence of early reading books- visual cues, phonics etc
-the importance of interaction- Vgotsky and Bruner again
-and any other factors that appear in the child's language that you can link to theories.

within each of these paragraphs i would then argue how far they are inflecting the child within the data and so link back to the question and debate at hand. i would then create a conclusion summarising my paints and my line of argument to finish.

Like i said, not my strongest subject but hope it can still help! If you like, i have a couple of annotated texts and essay plans which i can attach if it makes it easier to understand :smile:

Same here! One of my teachers said the evaluate question on paper 2 (aqa) might be occupation or ethnicity as theyre not in the spec papers ir last years papers either.... i hope not (im rubbish at ethnicity)
