Aqa A Level Sociology Exam 2018

Hey guys!
Just wanted to ask how everyone found the sociology exam? The first and last question threw me, but the 30 marker was a blessing 🙏🏻
Hopefully someone will make an unofficial mark scheme

I had 5 minutes left for the last question, chat absolute ****. Feel confident with it as a whole but don’t feel I went into enough detail and the 30 marker threw me a little

I agree with the first and the last question not being great. What two reasons did you give for problems with functionalism in today's society?

I liked it ! But think the grade boundaries will be high!
For the functionalist question
I said that it ignores the negative side of society e.g abuse, only looks at positive functions
And that it is no longer relevant in post modern society then talked about collapse of grand narratives and conflict etc

Overall easy exam but easy to make mistakes like the 20 marker I talked about observing excluded pupils in isolation rooms in schools and how it might be intimidating for a new researcher. 30 marker was a blessing atleast 24 and above for that question I talked about everything just didn't give sociologists for socialisation.

I ran out of time and forget stuff like material deprivation for my 30 marker. Last 10 marker through me completely off and my 20 marker was ****. Goodbye uni

Said it was out of date and used postmodernist to explain that and said they romanticise they’re ideas and ignore other factors such as social class and gender differences

I said that it has logical criticisms ie. it is teleological, it explains things in terms of their effect (it goes into depth in the book) popper thinks that this is unscientific as it cannot be falsified. And then I went on to state how it explains certain behaviours e.g. Deviant subcultures as being functional (social solidarity) and dysfunctional (not conforming to societies roles)
The second one I talked about was Merton's internal criticisms of the theory such as 'universal functionalism' which disregards the conflict in society by stating how everything in society is positive and then I brought Marxism into it (it's over optimistic)

I was so confused... How do you observe people who have been excluded from school?!?

I wrote a paragraph on an internal factor then kinda evaluated it with external factors and vice versa. A lot of my paragraphs had theoretical debate e.g post-modernists argue social class isn’t important in post-modern society, however Marxists argue ...

Para 1 - external factor - material deprivation evaluated it with parental aspirations (Bengali women more likely to be from WC backgrounds however are more likely to go to uni than white women)

Para 2 - external factor - cultural deprivation working class subcultures - fatality of their situation, low value on education, Douglas & parents evening. Evaluate it with keddie (myth of cultural deprivation), parents might feel inferior to the MC dominated system.

Para 3 - internal factors - labelling (Becker & ideal pupil) evaluated it with it being deterministic (fuller)

Para 4 - internal/external both - pupil identities. Formed outside school by socialisation and then conflict with school habitus (Archer - Nike identities) Evaluated with the fact that the education system is not purposely conflicting.

Conclusion - cannot separated it. Education is a social institution within society (existing paradigm). e.g pupils label pupils by preconceptions they hold due to their socialisation or class background external to school yet has internal effects.
