Messi or Ronaldo?

Like a team with Aguero, Dybala, Higuain, Otamendi & Di Maria?

Collection of individuals, not a side. Argentina have the better players, Portugal have the better team.

Better leader is the only thing Portugal has that Argentina doesn't. Other than that, both teams are absolutely awful. But, one is expected to be, the other was expected to make it to the last 4 at least.

Everyone was saying Otamendi had an amazing season for Man City.

Gonna say it 1 last time, Put Ronaldo in that Argentina team and he would make every single player on the team 50% better. Pure Leader, he makes players like Jose Fonte, Pepe at 35, Cedric, Guerriro, J. Mario look decent

Put Messi on the Portugal team and they wouldn't even be in the World Cup.

When they have 70+% possession each game it's hard not too look good
The salt in this thread is delicious.

Portugals squad is much better disciplined than Argentinas, better coach to boot. no-one with sense saw an Argentine side that nearly ****ed up qualifying and got bailed out by Messi to reach the semis.
It's laughable how after every bad game from either one of them the fan boys jump in and slate them.

Messi is the more naturally gifted footballer, but Ronaldo has got himself up on that level through incredible sheer hard work and persistence. The man's a machine. Ronaldo will go down as the GOAT, IMO, if Portugal do something special this WC and/or if Messi doesn't have the same longevity going into his later years. That's my hot take anyway.

Can't we just enjoy both of them though? The tribalism does my head in.
Messi talent wise GOAT without any equal (Only Brazilian Ronaldo comes close) but that speaks volumes on how amazing CR7 is. Guy has way better drive, determination, leadership qualities, is actually a great guy off the pitch and has won 5 CL and 5 B d'Ors in an era with Messi. People think Ronaldo is egotistical, when really it's his desire to be the absolute best.
Messi is better (than Ronaldo) at Barcelona where he is surrounded by other great players. However when both players aren’t surrounded by quality players (their international teams) Ronaldo works better more solo
Like the recent replies have said. Messi is probably the most gifted footballer ever but Ronaldo makes it work for him every single time with the limited abilities he has. There's been so many naturally gifted footballers over the decades. But there's been 0 players more clutch, more determined, hard working, efficient, professional and with better leadership skills.

Messi will be remembered for his dribbling, fancy touches, passes. But Ronaldo got rid of that as soon as he joined Real Madrid, he made it all about scoring goals and well...it's paid of massively. Always in the right place at the right time, always steals the show, no matter how bad of a game he has, can score a hattrick whilst only having 20 touches the entire game.
Luka Modric

That's all well and good, but hasn't Messi scored more goals than Ronaldo since he joined Madrid, while also still keeping those 'dribbling, fancy touches, passes' traits, and also being more of a team player?

Not even got into assists, chances created and key passes

It's not all about goals. And even if it was

It's still Messi > Ronaldo

Messi has scored 21 more goals with 28 more appearances than Ronaldo.
If that's the logic you want to use then I'd back Ronaldo to have scored at least 35 with his goal ratio if he had played 28 more games.

Impressive. Yet it's clear that Messi has played a deeper role in recent years while Ronaldo has played more central. Nothing against Ronaldo. An incredible player. Would have been regarded as the best of all time if Messi didn't exist.

They both take the same amount of shots a game. If anything Messi has the better chances and Ronaldo just decides to boot the ball from 30 yards out with 4 defenders in front of him.

And time will tell who's the goat. These past 5 years Ronaldo is pulling it back and ready to overtake with his upcoming 6th ballon do'r. After that anyone can say Messi is better but the future fans will look at the 6-5 ballon do'rs, 5 champions leagues - 5 champions leagues for Barcelona in their entire history etc

5 CLs yes. 4 won with Messi. And it's not all about club trophies. I agree that Ronaldo has closed the gap. As late as 2016 I'd say the answer was obviously Messi. But now Ronaldo has definitely caught up. But no one will ever be better than Messi in terms of raw ability, shooting, dribbling, passing, vision, intelligence. He has it all.

And don't forget Ronaldo has 3 years on Messi in terms of age, although I think Ronaldo can go until he's 50. best athlete football has seen

Those 3 years mean nothing. I see Messi retiring at maybe 34 and Ronaldo playing until he's at least 38.

And Messi may have the most talent and all that and his highlight reel might look good once he retires but Ronaldo has all the big statistics in his favour. It'll be like telling a young kid someday that Messi was better and he'll reply with..But Ronaldo scored 17 goals in the champions league and won. Messi got knocked out in the QF each time. Or that Messi plays for Argentina and never won anything but Ronaldo won the Euros.

He'll reply with that if he's stupid.

Knocked out in the QF each time? He's won 4.
