Studying a STEM degree at a target university. 1st class grade in first year. A*AA at A level. One spring insight with Deloitte, some unrelated work experience and a volunteering placement this summer. What chance do I have for an IB internship offer?

As long as you don't **** up on your applications you'll get a few interviews by virtue of being at a target, so a good chance so long as you know your sh*t.

7.25749%

Idk.. You've got a decent chance of getting an interview (or several) whether you're good enough to get an offer is on you.

build it yourself, simple probability theory
Studying a finance related degree from a target, with a first in my first year. A*AA at A-levels and 9A*s and 2As at GCSEs, but no relevant work experience whatsoever. What are my chances for a summer internship? Kinda just seems that all I've really done is performed decently in academia but nothing beyond that... :/ Any input is greatly appreciated.

Are you doing anything other that academia/work? Societies? Volunteering?

I am part of a few societies, but I am not on their subcommittees (so no real leadership positions). I have however done volunteering work in the past, i.e. worked with UNHCR mentoring refugee children.

Mention both of them and try to get more involved in them.
1 Year fintech consulting and doing back office consulting (not relevent for IB front office).

low 2:1 Nottingham Chemical Engineering

on 3 different committees final year, highest position VP in a well respected EC activity, one sponsorship/treasurer role raised 3k total

penultimate: treasurer/ corporate sponsorship fund raiser: raised 2k total

A*AB: A levels

8A*-A : GCSE

I fancy Sales and trading.
Would I even make it past the filters?

It’s difficult to predict, because grades are just one thing. It’s best you just go for it, and you’ll see then. Who knows, you may surprise yourself.

Put it this way, it’s more difficult getting into S&T than it is IBD, sounds crazy - but it is. BB’s pick way more people to have a place on their analyst programme than their S&T. There’s maybe around 10-20 places for S&T for a BB, and around 5000 people apply for each space!

Its very, very difficult. BUT, if you work hard you can get anywhere. AND, this would be an absolute MUST - MAKE A VIRTUAL TRADING PORTFOLIO! This goes along way, you’ll learn more about macro/micro econ, and a basic understanding of the markets. Good luck!
I'm mostly interested in trading for example credit derivative trading.

But If i just said i wanted to IB which division would someone with my profile have the best chance in?

You would most likely make it past filters - you have a Chem engineering degree on your hands.

Another thing you could do, is apply for a middle market bank, or an elite boutique, for a FO role which you would have a better chance of getting in than a BB, then move to a BB when you have experience!

Lets face it, it’s tough - you’re up against people who have studied all their life and speak 3 foreign languages such as mandarin etc, and have a maths 1st class from oxbridge. Or, you could apply for back/middle office roles in trade support, get to know the traders and network then move to a junior trading desk if you work hard enough.

I'm basically in trade support right now and trading software -_- lol. Tbh working at a boutique or even a middle bank really appeals to me, theres just so much out there i don't really know where to start.

If you have any names of people that are good in your opinion that might narrow and focus my applications down.

Oh right okay, I mean, being in trade support in something like derivatives would be really good. Especially “exotic” derivatives - very complex and derivative specialists are massively sought after in IB. If you work with derivatives in middle or back office, you can earn a lot of money.

Sure, you’ve got firms like Jeffries, Rothschild, evercore, William Blaire.. maybe even Deutsche? I think that’s still a BB, but it’s not a top BB.

I currently work on Over The Counter derivatives (OTC) and trading software for OTC derivatives. This includes exotics. I f****** love derivatives, hence why i want to get into trading. I literally LOVE it. I just nerd out talking about it.
