Is the Nightlife/Social Life at Exeter Uni really as bad as I hear?

I really want to go to Exeter, I love the uni and the course but I also really enjoy going out so the night life is quite important to me. I want to be able to meet lots of people and socialise and i’m worried Exeter might be kinda boring. Are there many parties in the halls where lots of people go as I hear there’s not much in the way of clubbing. I like late nights and drinking and i’m worried there won’t be many options for that. Also in where I’m from we do drugs a lot when we go out and i’m wondering if people in Exeter ever do to as I know it’s not that druggy but I also do them a lot and don’t want to not to them and want to be around people who will too. Thank you in advance!

Late nights, lots of drinking, lots of drugs, lots of parties....sounds like you'll be too busy to enjoy the uni and course if you ask me....

I’m already naturally quite academic and capable so I can manage going out a lot and doing well and making the most of the course. i’m going to be there for 3 years so I don’t want to go if I’m not going to have fun when I’m not working.

I don't know about that but what I have heard is that Exeter Uni has a bit of a rep for being racist ?

Sorry, just me being a bit of an arse. Ignore if you want.

Theres about 4-5 nightclubs (Unit 1, Lemmy, Mosaic, Timepiece...), plenty of bars and in my experience, there were plenty of parties on campus in halls. I'm not someone who was particular active night-life wise so I was happy with the city in this regard, I know plenty of people that think there isn't enough to do, and with only this many clubs, I can totally understand that. If you are happy going to the same places a lot then you could be fine, if you prefer variety then Exeter might not be for you.

Drugs wise, I can't speak from personal experience, but from what I hear of people who did do them, they were able to get hold of a range of stuff, so shouldn't be too many problems there.

I finished here just before all this stuff broke out. Can I just say, as someone who is part Asian, I never experienced or saw any cases of racism. From what I understand this was a small group of people in an online chat group posting racist messages. Nothing widespread about this at all. Not sure its a great idea to judge a university on the actions of a small number of students in a chat group, which the university have since condemned.

Thanks for replying! It’s really helpful to hear it’s still ok for nightlife. Is it true all the clubs shut at 1-2am? Does that mean everyone just goes home and to sleep at that time and the night just ends that early??? I’m used to things ending at 5am so 1 seems so early idk how much fun can be had. I’m ok with not much variety but do people go hard when they go out or is it all a little dead at the clubs rather than people going crazy having fun? Also it’s good to hear people at Exeter actually do drugs I had envisioned nobody being on anything and a drug scene being non existent so if there is people that go out and do drugs then that’s good. Sorry for all the questions I really appreciate the help!

Well. I wouldn’t say it’s a big drug scene. It may be a smaller one so expect some drugs at parties or clubs. Nothing to really worry about tho.

Yeah as long as I can find other groups of people that like to use them that’s good enough, I just don’t want to be taking them alone haha

Okay. You won’t be alone anyway. Just be careful and don’t take too much at once. And never mix with alcohol.

I never really stayed out that late but yes, I believe they do normally shut around then. Some people will just carry on at home though. Wouldn't say it was dead whenever I went out, people did actually go out looking to have fun, I imagine its the same at any city university.
I’m sure you can manage 3 years without a bag of coke constantly up your nose

I’m literally not that bothered about drugs I was mainly posting to find out what the nightlife is like and whether it’ll be fun and gain an inside perspective on what a night out is life and that was just a side note but go off I gues

Ok cool yeah I was hoping people might continue drinking etc together in the halls after clubs close so that’s good, thank you!
hiya  I had the same worry as you, I am not super extroverted and don't like going to clubs / drinking every night, but I still would like to have the option of lots of clubs / events to go to and I was a bit hesitant applying to Exeter so that I can meet more people, especially during freshers. I managed to find this video by Francesca Michaud on youtube called "Exeter nightlife - clubs in exeter" and she talks about all the available clubs and from what i can gather, she's quite extroverted and sociable, so it's probably safe to say she has an accurate opinion on exeter! I also have a few friends that go there and they say that it doesn't have as many clubs as some other unis, however, that's not a huge issue as it's the people that makes going out fun

Nightlife is pretty lame but with good company you can have decent nights out

Yeah hopefully if people are up for a good time then it shouldn’t matter too much what the actual clubs are like I guess!
