144hz or 240hz?

144Hz, even a 1070 will struggle with anything more.
There is no reason to run at 240hz, even the benefits of 144hz are tiny at best.
I'll assume you are at 1080p? And Freesync is AMD, G-sync is Nvidia. You may well want a TN panel for competitive gaming, that Asus one is more than adequate.

Before people ask, I have a GTX 1070 so I’m pretty sure I get the FPS and I don’t really care much about the FreeSync. I mainly play Overwatch and Fortnite but occasionally some other fps games. I’m using a 60hz monitor and I’ve never tried a 144hz or 240hz monitor before. Should I get the 144hz monitor or jump straight to 240hz? The cost isn’t really that much even though other 240hz monitors cost way more.

is it possible to get 240hz in 4k or (ideally ) 8k?

You don't need anything past 80hz.

Trust me, 144Hz makes a huge difference from 60Hz, but 240Hz makes almost no difference

Oh I thought it would be a huge difference because 240hz is nearly double 144hz, meaning double the frames per second that you can see. I’m most likely going for a 144hz monitor then.

Defo go for 144Hz, much smoother than 60Hz, don’t even think about anything more than 144

Yes, at retail, no.

Your GPU will not pull 240 FPS anyway in modern AAA games. Personally, I would rather have 1440P/60 FPS, or if I was richer 1440P/120FPS. I'm currently saving up for the latter.
