what does cultural marxism mean?

I hear this phrase a lot, what does it mean and if possible could you give an example?

The cultural Marxism is legal fake Marxism, when instead of World Revolution with massacring of world elites you make harmless blah-blah about SJW themes permitted by same elites. In other words this is total **** - no reasons to waste your time to such activity is exist.

I believe I am not nuts, although I suppose that might just be the cultural Marxist in me.

I don't think there's a proper definition of 'cultural Marxist' that isn't a put-down - it's basically a rallying cry for the Hard Right and the Libertarian Right, which they use to pose as victims. Their 'theory' is that the media, arts, education and government are dominated by Marxist or neo-Marxist thought and by sly, devious Marxists who, unable to take direct political power through the ballot box, have stealthily infiltrated those fields in order to spread Marxist theory and cause young people not to realise that their true interests lie with the above mentioned Rightists.

The theory uses many examples, but it's not very sustainable, given that mostly the media (the central target of the accusation) is owned by bigtime corporate capitalist interests, that many of the leading media outlets are status-quo bound, or else visibly and absurdly right wing and that all of the major media outlets with a very few exceptions have broadly accepted the doctrine that only free markets (whatever they are exactly) should be permitted to control all societal functions.

Undaunted, the attacks continue and have been a philosophical boon for the likes of Steve Bannon and the alt-Right "oh my god, we're so put upon" web haters and propagandists.

I sometimes wish Cultural Marxism was the thing they claim, as perhaps we wouldn't then be saddled with our country being led by the DUP and Nigel Farage and the leading power in the world by a rich playboy sex pest controlled from Moscow.

Basically let's suppose there's a thing you dislike. You just know that you should dislike it. You've never wondered why, but how could your own mind possibly be wrong? Now, you're not a bright chap so you decide that anyone who possibly likes that thing is stupid and there's no way it could be any other way. It's not as if they could have valid reasons for being different, no no, they're just bad. It's comforting to use absolutes so you decide to. Then you decide to associate some extra terms and phrases you know are bad with them, because there's nothing more fun than building a metaphorical totem of things you hate and then yelling at it. The specifics don't matter.
The great advantage of this is, if you hear something you don't agree with, that challenges your point of view, you don't even have to consider fallibility. You can just stick a term like "cultural marxism" to it, because that's all you need to forget about it and give yourself a sense of superiority. It just falls into the category of "bad", and that way you've made a nice shortcut for yourself, because you can easily and quickly decide that a bunch of things are so. It's so objective you don't need to think about changing your mind.

In short, meaningless BS used as a weasel word by idiots.

Okay, that may be the snarkiest tone I've ever used in my entire life.

Cultural Marxism has two meanings based on the context it is used in.

1) Cultural marxism refers to the Frankfurt School of researchers who believed that 'culture' was a capitalist idea imposed upon the masses. It was simply a critique of modern culture.

2) Cultural marxism can also refer to a conspiracy theory propagated by the alt-right to refer to people with progressive views, believing them to be secret communists who wants to overthrow capitalism and destroy the West. This is the definition many people are familiar with.

ok I think I get it, so like having a female Dr Who, or gay prof dumbldore, or black James Bond...is seen as the media pandering to the liberal elite agenda which "they" (right wing, daily mail readers) see as destabilizing society...

Wouldn't say (those) examples but you have the general point, to sum it up it's the idea that the media today pander towards a ("left") view culturally, with marxist being a smear to have the "oh a marxist" effect, since when you ask them to boil it down to what they are - at their core meaning, it doesn't sound all that appealing to the general populous.

Hence you tag on a word for a (drama) affect, the people who fall for it will by and large already are hooked on the Daily Express as their main source of news however.

As Bear mentioned, it all comes down in the end to Dr Who. The turning point was back in the 80s or some time around then, when the Daleks rejected Davros and took up with democratic socialism and changed their slogan from "exterminate, exterminate" to "indoctrinate, indoctrinate".

It's the tenuous theory that liberal-leaning elites, who believe there are "right" and "wrong" things to think, dominate the social and cultural landscape and propagate the silencing of views contrary to theirs whilst launching hyperbolic accusations against holders of such views.

There is hard evidence on the table that in education-high liberal spheres this problem exists. They are the new "regressive left" - which is a term originally coined by Maajid Nawaz to decry a "racism of low expectations" among people who apologise for the tolerance of illiberal Islamic principles - but I would argue is now a broader "bigotry of low expectations" against people of a putative oppressed group that express a different opinion or behaviour from them. They are confused by LGBT conservatives like Dave Rubin and Douglas Murray. Feminists who support the removal of walk-on girls in darts competitions find it inconceivable that some women may actually want to be employed in such work. For the BBC journalist that ran an article decrying Getty Images rating beautiful female fans at the World Cup, it is clearly inconceivable that some women wanted to be noticed in the crowds. Career opportunities.

However, I don't think it's as widespread a problem as thinkers such as Jordan Peterson make out. Occurrences such as Brexit and Trump, two of the starkest divergences between the establishment and the people in our times, have made it quite clear that the masses don't like being told what to think. They didn't like being scaremongered by Project Fear or being called "deplorables", and so they hit them as hard as they could, in the beautiful ballot box.

thanks for the reply, it was very interesting. I get it now, I thought maybe it was more specific but I see it's a very broad term covering media, social and identity politics etc. I don't share your views, but I see what it means now.
