How good is university of Southampton

I cannot understand how you can compare Engineering at Oxbridge to Eningeering at Imperial or Southampton.

By putting them next to each other in your mind and analysing the similarities and differences. That's how most things are compared...

Its a very good university, but thats about it, it doesnt really do much for its image, even its website for a RG looks fairly bland and unappealing.

You won't get the glossy feeling from top universities when browsing through its pages, and its entry requirements are lower then most RGs for many courses. Most who plan to do well in their a levels apply as a safety school. It has an above average offer rate.

You cannot put Cambridge's and Imperial's Mechanical Engineering next to each other in your mind because Cambridge does not offer Mechanical Engineering.

Depends for what purpose. For warming you up a cup of tea is better than an elephant. For travelling across savana, a cup of tea will get you nowhere - elephants are better. See, it's do-able. You've just got to think a little.

At no point have I said that Cambridge offered Mechanical Engineering. :yy:

A website shows how much a university cares about itself, look at lower tariff websites and then higher tariff websites.

Your webpage is a huge differentiator in the modern world. The importance really increases year over year as we go from millenial applicants to Gen Z.

The problem is: "what is more important: quality of education or website design (or how you called it - how much the univeristy cares about itself)?"

You wont apply or ever find out, if the website isnt impressive. My top choice became solidified back when i applied 2017...because i found myself consistently enjoying going back to that universities website and reading about, it gave me confidence this was a place that cared about itself.

The most popular unis do rank well lol. Obviously its not the only metric, but it will become increasingly more important. A website is alas the best way to convince a student to be inspired about your university.

I know someone who rejected Imperial for Southampton. So clearly Southampton is not that shabby. I personally think it's a great uni especially for engineering

You can take (a wide range of) mechanical options at Cambridge and graduate with a degree fully accredited by IMechE - so to all intents and purposes you have studied a MechEng course.

I expect @artful_lounger was talking about general quality of education within the engineering field for these universities. But you should take that up with them. I'd suggest you don't criticise someone for lack of explanation when your first post in this thread was this...
