Hopefully i've got a high enough first to offset that the only research experience I have is the funded summer project I'm doing atm.

I've been so busy up at the Edinburgh Fringe and planning a trip to the Galapagos (woo) that I forgot to start looking for one of these threads!
I'm already talking to my potential supervisor regarding projects, is anyone else looking to do their PhD via a DTP?

I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed by the prospect of the whole application process at the moment! Reading previous years' threads, it seems like a lot of PG applicants (especially in the sciences) have a lot of relevant experience outside of their degrees (e.g. working in labs) prior to applying which I don't have so much of (apart from my undergrad research project). I have good grades, especially in my research based modules, and I'll get good references from my supervisors at university, and I did a lot of extracurricular activities at uni although they're not really relevant to my research interest. I'm taking a year out and hoping to do a masters next year, and I've been applying for lab technician/research assistant jobs but I've been rejected a lot and struggled to find things that are relevant. I'm starting to regret every decision I've ever made and wish I had tried harder to find undergraduate placements etc when I was at uni
does anyone have any advice/reassurance they can offer me? I think I'm academically strong enough to apply, and I definitely have a passion for the subject, but I'm worried that I won't be a strong enough applicant based on the fact I haven't done 4 different funded summer projects/published any of my undergraduate work/won loads of awards/solved world hunger.

I see you've posted in both the Oxbridge forums - but honestly if you've not started university yet I'd just say enjoy your first year, join socitities, and try as best you can
(Sorry if you've already finished your first year!) Research internships are ace - chat around your department to find out how things work, but normally you can just ask lecturers - but in the sciences at least they're extremely hard to get in first year. If by any chance you're doing physics, message me and I can try and help more with internships (edited 5 years ago)

I plan on starting my application as soon as it opens on the 3rd of September! Thinking it might take a couple of weeks so wanna get started as soon as possible!
There's no real advantage is applying early. Rolling admissions just means they READ applications as they come in, they don't necessarily make decisions. Really, the only decisions made before Christmas are the dead cert Yes's and the dead cert No's. Everyone else hangs around until they've got a better idea of the general quality of the applicant field.
Chances are, by applying in Sep/Oct all you are doing is setting yourself for a lot of pressure and expectation and a very long wait. Better to wait until December, when you've had a chance to go to the Open Days or visit, and you've heard a bit more chatter about applications, you've had more chance to investigate the course, staff etc and you are altogether more prepared.

I'm applying for the PhD in Law. I am now working on shortening my research proposal, but I don't know if the 2,000 - 3,000 words in length should include the bibliography and the footnotes.
I've tried contact the phd admission office, but unfortunately the person that can help me id on vacation and will be back only in mid September.
Does anybody the answer?

I’m taking a trip to Cambridge to scope out the colleges today. At the moment it looks like my top choice is Emma because of funding. Second choice might be King’s, I’m not sure, but that’s kind of what today is for.
