What do you all think of as a strong first?
Hopefully i've got a high enough first to offset that the only research experience I have is the funded summer project I'm doing atm.

Hi, everyone! I've just graduated and am applying to Cambridge for the 2019/20 academic year. I've just started a full-time job as a Student Advisor at a London university as a way to earn money/ to have a well-deserved break from education, but am very excited to get back to studying!

I'm incredibly passionate about feminism and feminist politics, and have explored the field of Gender Studies quite intensely during my undergrad. I'm very interested in exploring the concept and gender theory surrounding homo-masculinities, and will be pursuing this for my Dissertation (if successful)!

Quite nervous about the application and admissions, even more nervous about funding as that's a huge barrier for me. Best of luck to everyone on their Cambridge journey!

Hi All!
I've been so busy up at the Edinburgh Fringe and planning a trip to the Galapagos (woo) that I forgot to start looking for one of these threads!
I'm already talking to my potential supervisor regarding projects, is anyone else looking to do their PhD via a DTP?

Current University: Southampton, starting my M.Res in Evolution next week!
- Achieved Grade: 2.1
- Prospective Course: PhD in Earth Sciences
- Prospective College: Undecided, I like the look of Churchill, Caius and Darwin (of course)!
- Fun fact/Extra Curricular activities: In charge of all things Palaeontology in our Natural History Society, student blogger, science, technology and sustainability writing for the student magazine, currently managing a project with bioengineering and archaeology to make an app about fossils, and as much public engagement and outreach as I can get in my schedule!
Hi, guys! Here are my stats!

Current University: Liverpool
Achieved (Expected) Grade: 1st
Prospective Course: MPhil Egyptology
Prospective College: Churchill, Downing, Emma or Queens' (I need to visit first)
Fun fact/Extra Curricular Activities: Archaeology society, educational consultant, radio society, student ambassador
Hi everyone:

I'll start by giving some stats -

Current university: Durham (just graduated)
Achieved grade: 1st
Prospective course: MPhil Biological Sciences (Plant Sciences)
Prospective college: unsure
Fun fact/extracurricular activities: Student volunteering, exec of student society, open day ambassador

I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed by the prospect of the whole application process at the moment! Reading previous years' threads, it seems like a lot of PG applicants (especially in the sciences) have a lot of relevant experience outside of their degrees (e.g. working in labs) prior to applying which I don't have so much of (apart from my undergrad research project). I have good grades, especially in my research based modules, and I'll get good references from my supervisors at university, and I did a lot of extracurricular activities at uni although they're not really relevant to my research interest. I'm taking a year out and hoping to do a masters next year, and I've been applying for lab technician/research assistant jobs but I've been rejected a lot and struggled to find things that are relevant. I'm starting to regret every decision I've ever made and wish I had tried harder to find undergraduate placements etc when I was at uni :frown: does anyone have any advice/reassurance they can offer me? I think I'm academically strong enough to apply, and I definitely have a passion for the subject, but I'm worried that I won't be a strong enough applicant based on the fact I haven't done 4 different funded summer projects/published any of my undergraduate work/won loads of awards/solved world hunger.

Hi guys! I won't be applying in 2019 but I'm looking for some advice on how I can build a good CV, gain experience and make the most out of my undergraduate years. So, I have some questions for you:

1. How important do you think your first year grades are?
2. How did you gain your research experience (if applicable to your subject)
3. When did you/will you first communicate with your supervisor?
4. When did you/will you apply (in relation to your undergrad studies)?

I see you've posted in both the Oxbridge forums - but honestly if you've not started university yet I'd just say enjoy your first year, join socitities, and try as best you can  (Sorry if you've already finished your first year!) Research internships are ace - chat around your department to find out how things work, but normally you can just ask lecturers - but in the sciences at least they're extremely hard to get in first year. If by any chance you're doing physics, message me and I can try and help more with internships

Hi! I am really excited about joining societies and enjoying activities other than studying.
However, I would like to be prepared from the beginning (due to anticipation and excitement mostly!), as my subject (which is not Physics or related to it) requires quite a lot of research experience too.
I had tried to find research internships in the past year, but was denied due to being underage, so now I can't wait for the chance to be involved with it again!

Thank you for your answer!

Ah that's a shame - sorry that I can't be much help then! I hope you find an internship anyway, and that you have a really lovely time  x

Some brief situation:
I am an international student studying BSc Project management for construction in UCL. Currently obtained 1st after year 2 and planning to apply for Mphil Real Estate Finance and another programme in Cambridge. Used to have some experience in consulting firms and real estate firms. I was intended to apply for Mphil Management in Judge Business School but I got an email from them saying I was not eligible to apply for it due to my management-related course structure. Hence, any advice for another programme that is feasible to achieve ?? I have looked through the website and still hesitated about the selection. Anyone knows if Mphil in innovation, Strategy and Organisation more achieveable than others in Judge Business School ?? Or any other recommendations?
By the way, is there anyone sharing the experience of writing statement of interest since I have never done this before.

Thank you !!!! :smile::smile:
When is everyone going to start applying??

When is everyone going to start applying??

I plan on starting my application as soon as it opens on the 3rd of September! Thinking it might take a couple of weeks so wanna get started as soon as possible!
There's no real advantage is applying early. Rolling admissions just means they READ applications as they come in, they don't necessarily make decisions. Really, the only decisions made before Christmas are the dead cert Yes's and the dead cert No's. Everyone else hangs around until they've got a better idea of the general quality of the applicant field.

Chances are, by applying in Sep/Oct all you are doing is setting yourself for a lot of pressure and expectation and a very long wait. Better to wait until December, when you've had a chance to go to the Open Days or visit, and you've heard a bit more chatter about applications, you've had more chance to investigate the course, staff etc and you are altogether more prepared.

Hi there!
I'm applying for the PhD in Law. I am now working on shortening my research proposal, but I don't know if the 2,000 - 3,000 words in length should include the bibliography and the footnotes.
I've tried contact the phd admission office, but unfortunately the person that can help me id on vacation and will be back only in mid September.

Does anybody the answer?

Thanks
Best of luck with applications opening tomorrow!

Does anyone find that the funding opportunities part in the form is problematic? If you fill in the personal statement part with more than 1000 characters, the page will crash. But the word limit is 3000 characters.
I’m taking a trip to Cambridge to scope out the colleges today. At the moment it looks like my top choice is Emma because of funding. Second choice might be King’s, I’m not sure, but that’s kind of what today is for.
