Uni after a gap year is a massive downer

My gap year was the best year of my life. A time to recharge and please myself. Now I’ve been at uni for 2 days. Moved into student accommodation and I’m so lonely. My flatmates had friends before they arrived so they’re spending time with them and I don’t want to be a third or fourth or fifth wheel.

My freshers week during the day is busy 9-5 and to go from the greatest year of my life with no responsibility to this lonely busy life is a massive downer and is making me depressed. I’m a guy who doesn’t tend to get emotional but I cry when I think about it because life only goes downhill from here. Back to the education grind and then tons of debt all because I wanted the “university experience” that I’m not having.

I’m expecting things to improve during my course but freshers week was never for me anyway. Everyone talking about how much they want to drink in a room full of strangers and constantly talking about booze, booze, booze is just so boring. People drowning out their feelings with cheap beer just isn’t what I’m in to as much as I like the odd drink.

Before I moved in there was a girl who seemed great in my group chat. I’d love to chat to her cause we have a lot of unique things in common but I’ve been out as much as I can without going out out and I haven’t seen her and leaving something to chance is a waste of time.

I just want to go back to my gap year. It was the best time of my life and this is a huge downer, the thought of lectures and work and a degree and going out and making friends and getting a girlfriend excited me but now it sickens me (apart from the gf part). It’s been nice to rant and cry. If you’ve read and have any advice or something I truly appreciate it. Hope you’re having a better time than I am x

I would give it time - it has only been 2 days and for some, it does take a little time to get settled in.

Have you met any of your course mates yet?

How come you are busy in your Fresher's Week from 9-5? There are evening events held for some societies, so you could look to attend these.

It's how the uni are doing it, think it's over the top and not what I signed up for so gonna skip some of it.

Haven't met course mates yet, looking forward to that a bit.
freshers is all fake bs like peer pressure on steroids. no one really wants to drink cheap beer in a hot messy kitchen with a group of strangers

People are playing music outside and everyone has to be up at 8am. I’m absolutely ready to leave
Hey! I went to uni after a gap year too, I'm now going into my second year. I was stressed about the workload at first too and after a year out it was hard to get back into the rhythm of attending lectures doing work etccc... But it'll get better! I did also find it harder to connect with others- a year makes a huge difference in terms of thinking/maturity but you'll find people you get along with! I'd recommend joining a society that interests you and to have a good balance so that you're not just doing loads of studying.Once you get back into a routine you'll find that the workload is manageable. Reading is something I love and sometimes I find it's best just to read a book rather than socialise etcc... It's a great escape imo. Everytime you think about the gap year and having no responsibility just remind yourself that you couldn't do that forever, you're getting a degree, hopefully pursuing a subject of interest so that further down the line you can get a job you like, earn money and progress in life. If you continued with another year like the gap year it would be fun but essentially serve no purpose? That's what helped me at the beginning of last year.

This will be me lol, I’ve just started my gap year (full time job with travel after) and I love the freedom. Honestly, getting back to the grind at uni makes my skin crawl😩😩. I got AAA at a Levels, so I’m relatively ‘academic’ but didn’t enjoy a Levels one bit. Which uni do you go to btw? Any advice for what to do during my gap year, sounds like I need to make the most out of it!😁

Hey I’m starting my gap year rn, but I’m doing a full-time job at a finance company. How did you find your gap year and what would you recommend I do?

Hey, my gap year was unplanned as I didn't get the grades needed for my firm and ended up in clearing, I tried doing a year in industry via a gap year company but it was too late to apply. So essentially I spent the year doing smaller things like tutoring and learning how to drive. I'd recommend planning a holiday for the summer. Inter railing is meant to be really fun. My top advice is to be organised. Time goes by soooooo fast- my experience anyways. Plan things in advance so that you can make the most out of your year.

Thanks, and I’ve only just sent my application to do a year in industry lol. Yeah I plan on applying for some work experience placements for spring/summer etc, maybe a language course abroad. I was even thinking of doing an extra a level...

Wow, what a self indulgent post, sorry but you really need to get a grip!

In effect you have been on one great big long holiday for year and now have the “holiday blues”. It’s that simple. You face the reality of actually having to do something and put some effort in and it’s a shock to the system!

Sorry but I have zero sympathy for you. Frankly, you need to get your act together and stop acting like a wet blanket. You only get out of life what you put in. You have a golden opportunity attending university dont waste it.

When you wake up tomorrow I suggest you dust yourself down and put some effort in to make the most of the opportunity before you. Join clubs, meet new people, work at your course and make something of your life!

This is is a classic example of why “gap years” or extended holidays as I see it, for many, in most cases before you have achieved anything in life are such a bad idea. Your year off has helped you lose your work ethic, you need to get that back. So stop the self indulgent whinging, pick yourself up and put some back into it!

ps. I’m shocked others posting here haven’t also given you a dose of reality? Or tough love! What do you think your mum or dad might say to you?

Won’t disclose uni atm but it’s in the Midlands. Not a prestigious uni but perfect for my degree.

Congrats on the A Level results! And spend your gap year any way you want! It’s a year of complete freedom where you’re kinda off the grid and not signed up to education. I spent a lot of it just staying in and then going out when my friends came back. I went to the gym a bit and got fitter. Really important time and would do anything to have it back so enjoy.

I know, enjoying it so much atm. I plan to get really healthy and learn to drive as well. And thanks!! I was planning on doing an extra A level (distance learnt) to get an A* and maybe improve my application, but dk how worthwhile this would be lol. Good luck with uni, I’m sure you’ll be fine!

My mum and dad are completely supportive of me and the decisions I make. Thanks for bringing them up?

Self-indulgent? What do you expect me to post? I just wanted a rant about my current situation. It goes deeper beyond loss of work ethic or a desire to not get into a routine. My accommodation and some of the people in it have been a disgrace quite frankly and it’s not boosted my morale at all.

I’m looking forward to joining societies and meeting people on my course but the first 2 days have been shocking and I’ve been missing home. That’s it.

Tell the people with the “golden opportunity” to stop making noise outside and playing music at 2am, I’m going to bed early to get sleep TO START THE GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY.

Hahahaha “wasted it”. Loved every second and didn’t have the money to travel. I was too tired to socialise on the first night anyway 🤫

Suppose it depends what uni you’re after. I had my place locked in before the year started. Perfect time to learn to drive, especially if you can do it soon. Less busy than in the summer.

Thanks, and cherish every minute 👍

Ignore other idiots on your course, it’s what you make of it now that counts!
youre mum and dad will love you no matter what, letting you bum around for a year probably not a great move, but they have supported your choices all the same and you have had the holiday!, it’s time now to move forward.
Delighted that you have seen sense and tomorrow you START THE GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY, don’t waste it, good luck

Thank you! Don’t listen to the other guys, it’s pretty normal to feel homesick/out of your comfort zone during the first few weeks of uni, or so I’ve heard from my friends at uni. I’ll try and be proactive during this year, but of course a lot of ‘me time’ won’t hurt😁
