What is the difference between the two degrees of History and Politics at Oxford and Cambridge? How do they differ and which one would you recommend?

Oxford
1st year

Either any one of the seven periods in the history of the British Isles or any one of the four periods of European/World history

Introduction to the theory of politics or Theories of the state

One optional subject:

a.) Quantification in history

b.) Approaches to history

c.) Historiography: Tacitus to Weber or any of the optional subjects (see History) except Theories of the state) or any one of six foreign texts

The practice of politics

Quantitative methods: political analysis (not examined)


2nd and 3rd years

A period of the history of the British Isles

A period of European/World history

Any two of the five core subjects in Politics:

1.

Comparative government

2.

British politics and government since 1900

3.

Theory of politics

4.

International relations

5.

Political sociology

One of the following combinations:

1.

A special subject in History (two papers) and an optional subject in Politics (either a core paper not yet taken or a further subject)

2.

A further subject in History and two optional subjects in Politics

3.

A further subject in History, one optional subject in Politics and one special subject in Politics

A thesis in either History or Politics


Cambridge

Year 1
In Year 1, all students take:

Evidence and Argument

The Modern State and its Alternatives

International Conflict, Order and Justice


You also choose a history paper, the current options are:

British Political History 1485-1714

British Political History 1688-1886

British Political History Since 1880

European History 1715-1890

European History Since 1890

North American History from c. 1500 to 1865



Year 2
In Year 2, students choose one paper in each of the following categories:

a paper in the history of political thought

a paper in international organisation or comparative politics

a further history paper from a range of options including periods of world history, American history, European history, and British social and economic history

For the fourth paper, you can either study Statistics and Methods or write two 5,000 word essays on questions drawn from a wide range of topics in history and politics.



Year 3

All students take an interdisciplinary paper that considers general and thematic issues in history and politics and the relationship between them.

You then choose three papers from a range on the Politics and International Relations and History courses. The papers available each year may vary see the website for those currently offered. Alternatively, you can replace one of these three papers with a dissertation of 10,000-15,000 words on a topic of your choice within the scope of the course.

Reading. Think more supercurricular than extra curricular.:wink: Do some extra reading around a historical subject with which you don't already study in school. Essay competitions might look good but it's important that you demonstrate your interest, passion and commitment to the subject rather than your ability to write about it.
