The question is:

The complete combustion of carbon in oxygen gives carbon dioxide, write a balanced equation and calculate the volume of oxygen that would react with 10g of carbon and the volume of carbon dioxide formed.

You wll need to start with the equation

The "+ heat" is not part of a 'proper' chemical equation and should be omitted. All reactions have some thermal energy change, but this is not included in anything other than a word equation and where of particular relevance :smile:

No you need to work out how many moles of oxygen are required and calculate the volume of oxygen that would be.

Then do the same for the CO2 formed.

C + O2 --> CO2

moles of carbon = mass/ Mr (relative mass) = 10/12 = 0.833 moles

This is the same amount of moles of oxygen as the ratio is 1 : 1. Also the same moles for CO2

Then use volume = moles x volume constant (22.4dm3 at stp, 24dm3 at rtp)

Do you have the correct answer at hand? Also are you told if the reaction occurs at room temp or standard temp etc. Im assuming the substances were heated?

Thank you that was helpful. I don’t have the correct answer at hand but it was mentioned that it occurs at room temperature and pressure

He stated that it is a combustion reaction so we can assume it was heated

Okay so you use the rtp value of 24. Moles x 24 should give you the volume. :smile:
