Music university

Hi everyone! I’m after some advice regarding university. I’m currently in year 12 but I’m already starting to think about where I want to go after college. I’m pretty set on the fact that I want to study music in some capacity: with the hopes of advancing towards a career such as music teaching, Music therapy, vocal coaching or something else in the music industry. I’m a vocalist/guitarist/songwriter so my choice of degree would be something relevant to that. I was looking at places such as BIMM, icmp and ACM as I know they are specialist music universities but I’m also open to looking into any other university which offer high-quality music degrees. I was wondering if anyone on here had studied at any of the listed universities and would be willing to share their experiences? Or if anyone has studied music preferably songwriting, music performance or music therapy of some sort at another university and how they found it? Also if anyone has pursued a career in either music teaching, music therapy or vocal coaching I would be interested to hear more about the profession as I haven’t yet spoken to many people in depth about these specific careers. Thanks!!

Hey,

Firstly, from my own experience when looking at Unis/Places of Study, I wouldn't recommend institues like BIMM, ICMP, ACM or LCCM unless you're in a good financial position as you don't get full coverage for your tuition fee loan (I also think Maintenance loan might be affected but don't quote me on that!).

Instead, I'd recommend courses at traditional universities, but some that are more practical based. I'm currently studying Commercial Music at Bath Spa in my first year which I'm really enjoying so far, and the tutors here have tonnes of industry experience (Number 1 Albums, Top 10 Singles, A Bafta Award, etc). BA Music at Brunel also looks like a decent course, but I wouldn't be able to tell you any details other than whats on the website. I'm fairly certain Cardiff, Bristol and a few other Unis also offer similar degrees to the two I mentioned but I'm not 100% sure.

Ultimately, I'd of course recommend my own course - if you have any questions at all feel free to ask me and I'll be happy to answer and if there's anything I don't know, I'll ask some of the guys in their 3rd year

Cheers for the tag

Hi @Ellmay10,

If you're looking to pursue music as a career, could I introduce you to Echo Factory?

Built and run by musicians for musicians, Echo Factory is a specialist music school based in the heart of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter that delivers music industry-focused degrees in BMus (Hons) Contemporary Music Performance (COURSE CODE: W315) and BA (Hons) Music Business (COURSE CODE: W375).

We keep our course fees really accessible (£6165 if you're joining in 2019) and we pride ourselves in offering our students significant opportunities to collaborate, stretch your creativity and get involved in the music scene whilst simultaneously developing your ability to navigate the complexities of the modern music industry.

We don’t just look at music in isolation however as we believe that the entrepreneurial skills that you gain as a musician are equally important to building a successful, sustainable career, so - alongside developing our students as well-rounded professional musicians - our team of experienced music industry specialists are also committed to building students’ commercial awareness, practical skills and entrepreneurial mindsets to allow you to be fully equipped, connected and ready to launch your career in music - whether that's on-stage or behind the scenes.

We also deliberately keep our class sizes small as this allows us to personalise our approach and tailor our support to empower each of our students as individuals so that we can help develop your unique talents, passion for music and portfolio of experience in whatever direction you choose.

If you have any questions about studying at Echo Factory, please feel free to get in touch with me or my team for unbiased, practical support. You can reach us either by calling 0116 253 5657 or by emailing us at [email protected].

You could even sign up to our next Open Day on November 17th! This will allow you to tour our facilities, learn more about our courses, speak with our Head of Studies and find out how we can help you explore your options and reach where you want to be!

All the best,
Ashley

Hey! I’m looking at Bath Spa for Music, but I’m leaning more towards specializations like accompaniment and music history. Does Bath Spa offer a more flexible course where I can have a little more freedom with my modules? Or do they sort of plan everything and there’s not much flexibility or specialization?

Hey. I'm doing Commercial Music rather than Music so I'm not 100% sure. For the First Year I'm fairly sure all the modules are core, but there should be some flexibility in 2nd and 3rd years. I'd recommend coming down for an Open Day and having a look round. I know that at the moment they're looking at Medievel Music in Year 1, which is something that might interest you if you like looking at Music History (one of the lecturers apparently had and played a Hurdy-Gurdy.

Hopefully that's of some help

Im currently studying at ACM Birmingham and @PetrosAC is right, they didn't cover your full tuition loan (Which I wish they told me before I enrolled an had to fork out £280)
Thats now been sorted and as of 19/20 enrollment of fees will be covered.
ACM has amazing industry professionals and great opportunities and masterclasses (masterclasses with famous musicians only at their London & Guildford campus' (Another thing I wish I was told before enrolling))

Hi,

I go to Birmingham City University and study within the Digital Technology faculty. I know a few people who study music / sound courses and they really like it because they can take full advantage of The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Let me know if you have any questions about studying in Birmingham.

Hope this has helped,
Adam
