Music university

Hi everyone! I’m after some advice regarding university. I’m currently in year 12 but I’m already starting to think about where I want to go after college. I’m pretty set on the fact that I want to study music in some capacity: with the hopes of advancing towards a career such as music teaching, Music therapy, vocal coaching or something else in the music industry. I’m a vocalist/guitarist/songwriter so my choice of degree would be something relevant to that. I was looking at places such as BIMM, icmp and ACM as I know they are specialist music universities but I’m also open to looking into any other university which offer high-quality music degrees. I was wondering if anyone on here had studied at any of the listed universities and would be willing to share their experiences? Or if anyone has studied music preferably songwriting, music performance or music therapy of some sort at another university and how they found it? Also if anyone has pursued a career in either music teaching, music therapy or vocal coaching I would be interested to hear more about the profession as I haven’t yet spoken to many people in depth about these specific careers. Thanks!!

Firstly, from my own experience when looking at Unis/Places of Study, I wouldn't recommend institues like BIMM, ICMP, ACM or LCCM unless you're in a good financial position as you don't get full coverage for your tuition fee loan (I also think Maintenance loan might be affected but don't quote me on that!).

Instead, I'd recommend courses at traditional universities, but some that are more practical based. I'm currently studying Commercial Music at Bath Spa in my first year which I'm really enjoying so far, and the tutors here have tonnes of industry experience (Number 1 Albums, Top 10 Singles, A Bafta Award, etc). BA Music at Brunel also looks like a decent course, but I wouldn't be able to tell you any details other than whats on the website. I'm fairly certain Cardiff, Bristol and a few other Unis also offer similar degrees to the two I mentioned but I'm not 100% sure.

Ultimately, I'd of course recommend my own course - if you have any questions at all feel free to ask me and I'll be happy to answer and if there's anything I don't know, I'll ask some of the guys in their 3rd year

Hey! I’m looking at Bath Spa for Music, but I’m leaning more towards specializations like accompaniment and music history. Does Bath Spa offer a more flexible course where I can have a little more freedom with my modules? Or do they sort of plan everything and there’s not much flexibility or specialization?
