British Army Medical Appeal

So I was wondering if anyone has any advice. I've applied for the Army to join as a registered nurse. Got my medical back today and was rejected as apparently I have a history of left wrist pain diagnosed as likely carpel tunnel with epicondylitis on my left elbow. I knew nothing about this. I remember attending the Dr's one two separate occasions for pain in my wrist which went away and the same for my elbow. But this was the last thing I thought could crop up, it was a surprise to say the least.

So obviously I am going to appeal. Has anyone been through this process before and have any advice? Or how the letter should be laid out when sent with the Drs evidence.

So obviously I am going to appeal.

On what grounds?

I’ve just appealed against a different issue, apparently I have had chronic back pain as I went to the doctors with a sore back when I was 12, soon sorted with a bit of physio. My appeal was rejected despite citing a gp letter saying I was fine and evidence of undertaking training similar to the type of training I’d be doing in the army. It’s an absolute joke.

I don't have carpel tunnel or epicondylitis.

Are you able to appeal further? What are your options now?

I believe so and I probably will but it seems like a bit of a waste of time for me if they're not even going to look at the evidence I provided in my appeal. I was passed fit by a Royal navy doctor and entered training with the Royal Marines at the start of the year but apparently this isn't good enough for them. I'd just make sure you take the time to gather evidence and provide a well-structured appeal.

What does it say on your medical records?

You can appeal if you can show there is something incorrect or missing from your docs. So, if these specific conditions have been noted on your records and you believe these to be wrong, you will not only have to see if your GP will change the records, there will have to be an explanation for the pain that occurred and what has changed from any previous diagosis.

As above, you will need to prove this and prove that what you had previously was something else.

I started a application to join the Army back in January. all went well until I received a letter from the Army Recruitment saying I unsuccessful as I had F8 ( medically unfit ) due to an allergy reaction Urticaria rash back in 2016. I was gutted. But I appealed I called the drs got bloods taken, I took all the steps the Army needed ( the letter stated that they would only accept bsaci supported hospitals) I phoned around and found the nearest to me was Manchester. I live in Cheshire, I had to wait 4 weeks for an appt letter, which was in July 😩 but in September I got a letter confirming all that I needed to hear that I do not have any allergies and what is on my drs file doesn’t match with what has been reported, so I wrote a letter and explained all, copied all my results and letters to the medical appeal team and waited. Finally after 7 months of waiting and stressing I got the call yesterday to say that I had won my appeal. Maybe you need to go to a specialist of the area they have concerns over and get them to give you the ok via paper work!! Hope this helps and good luck x

In my records its documented as "likely diagnosis" and I also attended once for wrist pain (played a lot of netball so no doubt from that) and once for unrelated elbow pain. I've used the GP EMS computer system myself so I am guessing when she logged it on the system it flagged up as my having had a similar issue 3 years previous and she's clicked to say it's related. I have a good relationship with my GP who is happy to back me up on it all.

Are you involved in the army at all? you seem to be well informed. Quite helpful, I appreciate it.

Wow sounds like you have had a lot going on! Congratulations for a start! I am hoping I can win my appeal, my feedback does say on it there may be other reasons to being declined so hoping thats generic. My GP is happy to fight my corner, has military in his family too so is happy to help which is lucky!

I am so bad at writing letters, what sort of format did you use?

Is there a reason you didn't stick with the marines? I was thinking of applying there if all else fails with the army. If I were you i'd continue to appeal for as long as possible. It is my intention to do just that.

Ex--RAF, but the systems are pretty similar.

Pretty much, I wasn't very good at personal admin and would be up until the early hours (3am+) sorting out my stuff for the next day, and with the amount of phys you do I just couldn't recover and my body couldn't really take it anymore and I ended up getting discharged for poor admin, looking back on it i wasn't very well prepared. I'd actively encourage anyone to go for the Marines over the Army if you're into a frontline role, but bare in mind I believe 1300 women have applied and none have passed selection yet so you'd have to be very physically prepared. In my eyes it's much more of a challenge simply to get into training, let alone complete it. Anything else let me know.
